Summary
Reginald Charles Wright, lawyer and parliamentarian, was born at Central Castra. Graduating in Arts and Law from the University of Tasmania, he practised from 1928 until 1980 as a barrister and solicitor, with a reputation in all jurisdictions for preparation and tenacity.
Details
He appeared in notorious cases such as Orr v University of Tasmania and Hursey v Waterside Workers' Federation, and in leading cases throughout his career. A founding member of the Liberal Party, he was MHA for Franklin from 1946 to 1949, and Senator from 1949 to 1978. He regarded the Senate as vital in preserving the integrity of the states and as a watchdog on executive power, and was frequently in conflict with his party, but served in the Gorton and McMahon ministries from 1968 to 1972. He retired to Central Castra in 1978.
