Landscape-scale Conservation

Geography,Planning, and Spatial Sciences Research Theme

Overview

We are in a time of unprecedented change – our environments, communities and climate are all rapidly transforming. Conserving ecosystems is imperative for protecting our natural environments and ensuring the continued provisioning of ecosystem services – such as clean air and water – to support healthy communities. Landscape conservation – the scaling up of conservation actions to landscape levels – is critical for achieving conservation goals in this time of unprecedented change. This requires understanding ecosystem dynamics at landscape (and larger) scales as well as working across dynamic communities. This work is motivated by a joint concern for the well-being of people and nature.

Our research addresses the range of conservation tools available – from natural resource management through to protected areas – and focuses on a range of conservation interests and contexts.

Key areas of activity:

  • Protected area governance and management
  • Species conservation in diverse contexts
  • Geoheritage conservation and management
  • Natural Resource Management
  • Conservation at regional to global scales
