The typical shelf life of raspberries is only about a week when stored in the fridge. PhD candidate Nha Huynh is working to improve storability and packaging, so fresh berries are available for longer.
Nha has looked at the effects that different processing techniques and packaging have on the shelf life of raspberries. Preliminary tests have shown that specific packaging extended the shelf life of berries and broccoli.
Nha is also working to find environmentally-friendly packaging for broccoli during transit.
Further tests such as hot water dipping also showed a reduced browning in broccoli stalks.
Nha is currently developing further trials on berries and broccoli, aiming for completion of her PhD in 2020.
