A Special Presentation on Proactive Policing and Discretion by Dr Richard Southby

Richard Southby presentingOn 7th October, the Institute and the Department of Police, Fire and Emergency Management (Tasmania Police) co-hosted a special presentation on Proactive Policing and Discretion by Dr Richard F. Southby, K.St.J. Dr Southby is Executive Dean and Distinguished Professor of Global Health Emeritus, Milken Institute School of Public Health, at The George Washington University and Senior Educational Adviser, Metropolitan Police Department, Washington, DC.

Dr Southby’s talk focused on challenges confronting the profession of policing, mental health and public health factors and preparing police officers in recognising and understanding these non-law enforcement factors during their police recruit training.

The presentation was held at the Tasmania Police Academy and specifically for the Tasmania Police staff and University of Tasmania academics involved in delivering training and teaching to Tasmania Police recruits.

TILES has a long-standing and successful relationship with the Department of Police, Fire and Emergency Management (DPFEM), and is engaged with the School of Social Sciences in a successful collaboration between the University and the DPFEM in teaching, especially in the development of the Bachelor of Social Science (Police Studies) degree and programs.
