Publication of Policing in the Pacific Islands

TILES researcher Dr Loene Howes announces the publication of Policing in the Pacific Islands. The open access book is part of the Palgrave's Critical Policing Studies series.

The book brings together insights into Pacific policing. Within, policing is conceptualised broadly as order maintenance involving the actions of multiple local, regional and international actors with sometimes competing and conflicting agendas.

The publication was led by Associate Professor Danielle Watson, Queensland University of Technology (QUT), working with Dr Howes, Associate Professor Sinclair Dinnen, Australian National University, Professor Melissa Bull (QUT), and Dr Sara Amin, University of the South Pacific.

The book examines how Pacific policing is shaped by changing state-society relations in different national contexts and ongoing processes of globalisation. Throughout, the authors draw on examples from across the Pacific islands to illustrate their discussion of policing in this socially diverse and rapidly transforming region.

Policing in the Pacific Islands book cover. A blue and green geometric pattern fills the cover of the book. There is a large green square on the middle of the left side of the cover. The title, Policing in the Pacific Islands, is in bold white letters in the square. The authors, Danielle Watson, Loene Howes, Sinclair Dinnen, Melissa Bull, and Sara N. Amin, are listed in smaller white text below in title. A Palgrave Pivot logo is in grey above the green box. At the bottom of the cover there is white label marking the book as open source next to a white logo for Palgrave MacMillan publishing.

Chapters include:

  • Context-specific issues and challenges of policing
  • Trends in and social dynamics of crime
  • Plural policing
  • The international policing agenda
  • Women and the institution of policing

The book is available to read and download for free through Springer Link.
