TILES Deputy Director Angela Dwyer named as Western Society of Criminology award recipient

TILES Deputy Director Angela Dwyer has been named as the 2023 recipient of the Western Society of Criminology Richard Tewksbury award for her work at the intersection of sexuality, sex and gender diversity and crime.

Board President of the Western Society of Criminology David MacAlister said Associate Professor Dwyer has been recognised, “For her nearly two decades of scholarly inquiry and tireless advocacy.” Her nomination acknowledged academic outputs along with advocacy and community service around lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer plus (LGBTIQ+) people as they relate to juvenile justice, policing, criminalisation, and victimology.

In response to being named as the recipient Associate Professor Dwyer said, “I am so humbled to receive this important award as many scholars I deeply admire have received it before me. I want to sincerely thank the Western Society of Criminology, my wonderful colleagues, and the equally wonderful LGBTIQ+ people that make my work possible.”

TILES Director Professor Nicole Asquith congratulated Associate Professor Dwyer stating, “Her international leadership on these issues has highlighted the incredible social changes that have occurred over the last 20 years, but also what still needs to be done to address the issues facing policing organisations, their LGBTIQ+ staff, and LGBTIQ+ communities. This award recognises that leadership and impact, and places Associate Professor Dwyer, and TILES, at the forefront of policy and practice innovation.”

The award was established by the Western Society of Criminology board in 2012 and named after the inaugural winner, Richard Tewksbury. Associate Professor Dwyer has been invited to attend the annual Society meeting in Vancouver, Canada in February 2023 to accept the award.
