TILES launches Briefing Note series

TILES has launched a Briefing Note series to showcase the industry research being undertaken by people associated with TILES, including Professional Honours policing students.

The first Briefing Note examines the safety and security issues facing police and their families when working in rural, regional, and remote areas in Tasmania. Written by TILES Research Manager and Senior Research Assistant, Dr Jess Rodgers and Director, Professor Nicole Asquith, this Note draws on their research which undertook observation and interviews with police.

“We are proud to launch this series showcasing the important work of policing practitioners and researchers with a view to directly informing policy and practice,” said Associate Professor Angela Dwyer, TILES Deputy Director. “TILES is particularly excited to receive submissions from in-service policing students working on practical research relevant to our stakeholders, especially Australasian policing organisations.”

Associate Professor Dwyer said the Briefing Note series is “critically important in widening the impact of the work at TILES, and to cement the Institute’s role as a leading contributor to evidence-based practice.”

Briefing Notes are short (800 words) and focus on very specific issues, such as a certain policy or practice. The launch of the Briefing Note series has been accompanied by the development of an Editorial Board to steer the focus of TILES publications. Board members will help to identify what is required from an academic and practitioner perspective.

This Board is made up of invited academics and practitioners from policing, criminology, and public health disciplines. Board members participate in anonymously reviewing TILES Briefing Notes, along with the longer form TILES Briefing Papers. This peer review ensures quality, accessibility and relevance to the people who most need the evidence of better practices.

Researchers whose work aligns with the focus of TILES are invited to contact us to find more out about publication requirements, and to consider a submission.
