In February 2014 the new Tourism major was officially launched at the University of Tasmania. The cross disciplinary major is the first of its kind to be offered at the University of Tasmania and it was the culmination of extensive industry consultation into the needs of the tourism industry and the current trends of tertiary tourism education around the world.
Critical to the success of this major is: a) communication and coordination between all those involved in teaching the 40plus units which may be taken by Tourism Major students; and b) assurance that the delivery of the tourism units in the Major respond to the needs of the tourism industry, which were articulated to the University of Tasmania via the Tourism Major review in 2013.
Students may study a Tourism Major within their Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science of Bachelor of Business degrees.
Students study a variety of tourism units within the major, including:
- The Dynamics of Tourism
- Sustainable Tourism
- Destination Management
- Festival and Event Management
- Creativity and Culture for a Mobile World
- Food, Wine and Agritourism
The new Tourism Major also incorporates a Corporate Internship unit, giving students the opportunity to work with industry on real life projects. Students have previously completed internships with MONA, Flinders Island Tourism, Parks and Wildlife and the Port Arthur Historic Site Management Authority.
