Metalejeunea is a monotypic genus represented by a single species,
M. cucullata which is quixotically distributed in Queensland,
Tasmania and New Zealand. This rare species occurs epiphytically in
wet forest to rainforest.
Metalejeunea cucullata is superficially similar to
Diplasiolejeunea plicatioba but is a
smaller species, has one underleaf per pair of lateral leaves, and
the leaf insertion to the stem is wider (i,e attached with more
cells).
