App for sheep graziers

Project details

Status: Completed

TIA Researchers, Dr Brian Horton and Dr Ross Corkrey have contributed to a national project to develop a web-based program to help sheep graziers accurately predict sheep wellbeing and productivity.

An initiative of the Sheep CRC, the program is set to become a useful tool for sheep graziers in Tasmania and around the country.

Dr Horton and Dr Corkrey analysed large data sets relating to risk factors for sheep health and developed models to predict situations where sheep wellbeing is likely to be adversely affected, including a flystrike model and a cold-and-heat model. Researchers in other states developed models for pasture growth and internal parasite risks.

The models will be used in conjunction with weather forecasts from the Bureau of Meteorology to identify risk factors and produce alerts for sheep graziers.
