On average, approximately 10 per cent of dairy pastures are renovated each year with dairy farmers investing more than $100 in renovation costs. The predominant sown pasture is perennial ryegrass.
Until now, there has been no easy way to assess the agronomic performance or potential economic benefit of different pasture cultivars for use in dairy production.
The Forage Value Index (FVI) is a rating system that helps Australian dairy producers to make more informed decisions when selecting perennial ryegrass cultivars. It provides an accurate, reliable and independent assessment of the potential economic value of perennial ryegrass cultivars in different dairy regions of south-east Australia.
TIA’s Dairy Research Facility is the trial site for evaluating the performance of 30 perennial ryegrass cultivars that have been nominated for testing by the Australian pasture seed industry.
This project will operate as a sub-contract under the larger national FVI project being led by the Victorian Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources (DEDJTR).
