The Making of a Japanese 小学校〜それは小さな社会〜

Pre-school 6 year-olds around the world are remarkably similar, but a post-elementary school 12-year-old distinctly embodies the distinct traits that form the basis of Japanese society.

Tsukado, located in one of Tokyo’s sprawling suburbs, is one of the largest public elementary schools in Japan with nearly 1,000 students. In the nation’s unique educational system, children are tasked to run their own school in order to teach communal values and how to play one’s role in the group. Intimately capturing one school year from the perspective of 1st and 6th graders, THE MAKING OF A JAPANESE has the magic of childhood with precious moments of joy, tears, and discovery — as they learn the traits necessary to become part of Japanese society.

The event is part of JFF (Japan Film Festival) Theatre, supported by the University of Tasmania and the Consulate-General of Japan in Melbourne. It is an Anniversary Event of 50th Anniversary of the Signing of the Basic Treaty of Friendship and Co-operation between Japan and Australia.

Award Ceremony - Japanese Foriegn Minister's Commendation to Dr Emerald L King

The Embassy of Japan is pleased to announce that on 16 June, in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Basic Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation between Japan and Australia (NARA Treaty) this year, the Foreign Minister’s Commendations were awarded to 12 individuals and 6 organisations in recognition of their contributions to Japan-Australia relations in various fields, including promotion of mutual understanding between Japan and Australia, the enhancement of economic relations, and the advancement of sister-city exchanges.

The Foreign Minister’s Commendations are awarded to individuals and groups with outstanding achievements in international fields, in order to acknowledge their contributions to the promotion of friendship between Japan and other countries and areas. The Commendations also aim to promote the understanding and support of the Japanese public for the activities of the recipients.

This year, the work of Dr Emerald L King in furthering Japanese language, literature and popular culture has been recognised.
