In 2021 I began a Future Fellow in the School of Geography, Planning, and Spatial Sciences at the University of Tasmania. My Future Fellowship will compile and analyse a 2000-year palaeoclimate record of single event and complex climate extremes to provide a long-term context for observed changes in climate extremes over recent decades. This analysis will generate new knowledge about long-term variability in the frequency and magnitude of climate extremes that occur on seasonal – decadal time scales. It will also provide information about complex extremes involving multiple types of impacts (such as drought followed by flood, or simultaneous drought and fire).  This kind of information can then be incorporated into risk estimates for the impacts of climate extremes on Australian government and industry infrastructure.

Biography

I was awarded my PhD in 1999.  For the next 9 years I worked in a variety of non-academic roles, including local and state government, industry and teaching (secondary and tertiary). I returned to an academic role part time in 2008, briefly at Utas as a Research Associate and then as a post-doctoral researcher in Biological Sciences at Monash University for the next five years.  In 2014 I transferred to the University of Melbourne where I have worked as post-doctoral researcher within the School of Ecosystem and Forest Science up until my commencement of a Future Fellowship within the School of Geography, Planning, and Spatial Sciences at the University of Tasmania. During the last 11 years, I have worked with a variety of highly motivated, supportive and enthusiastic scientists within the climate and palaeosciences communities. To date, much of my work has focussed on reconstructing past climate using tree-rings.

Research Themes

My work improves our understanding of past environments, and the implications of this knowledge for future land management practices and infrastructure design. As such, my research is aligned with three UTAS research themes, including Environment, Resources and Sustainability; and Data, Knowledge and Decisions.

Collaboration

I have collaborated widely with palaeoclimatologists, climate modellers and ecologists both nationally and internationally, and I have active collaborations with high profile researchers in North and South America, Europe, Asia and New Zealand. I have worked with industry as well as academic colleagues. My Future Fellowship will further extend this international collaborative network, especially with palaeooclimate scientists.

Current projects

My Future Fellowship will focus on extracting long term records of climate extremes, including compound climate extremes, from a global database of palaeoclimate records.  This long and spatially extensive record will better inform estimates of risks of climate extremes.  It will also better contexturalise current changes in frequency and magnitude of extremes in the short observational record.

Publications

My published work is largely within the palaeoclimate sphere, and most deals with the use of tree-rings to reconstruct past climate.  I have also been involved with archaeological work in Australia. Some recent important contributions include multi-author descriptions of databases, or approaches to archiving palaeoclimate information, as well as a recent tree-ring drought reconstruction for the Australian tropics.

A NATURAL HAZARDS ATLAS FOR TASMANIA: MAPPING NATURAL HAZARDS TO BUILD DISASTER RESILIENCE AND PREPAREDNESS (2024 - 2026)$2,247,890
Description
The proposed project will incorporate a spatial-analytical approach leveraging the expertise within the School of Geography, Planning and Spatial Sciences (GPSS) and the embedded Climate Futures Research Group at the University of Tasmania. Climate Futures recently completed a Natural Hazards Atlas, focusing on Heatwaves and Bushfires to support decision making and climate-resilient planning in Tasmania. Version 1.0 of the Natural Hazards Atlas provides extensive technical information on these two types of extreme events. The fine-scaled climate information that underpins this document is accessible within the Tasmanian Governments TheList, making it usable in hard-copy and digital forms. The atlas supports prioritisation of future strategic investments to increase resilience to these current and emerging natural hazards. Building on multidisciplinary expertise within GPSS, this proposal extends natural hazards mapping to produce a new Natural Hazards Atlas for Tasmanian Communities, intended to better inform Tasmanians and enable local hazard preparedness. As well as providing new and extended technical information, this proposal has a large communication and translation component, to ensure crucial hazards information reaches more Tasmanian decision makers. To provide multi-sector perspectives, the proposed project team will create a delivery approach that will build on existing partnerships as well as establish new partnerships, and it will incorporate experts from other organisations, including the Bureau of Meteorology, CSIRO, local government and regional NRM agencies.Project deliverables include: 1)Stakeholder consultation/needs analysis; 2)Hazards analysis and modelling; 3)Translation/Communication (products may include interactive web mapping tool; mobile app); and 4)Capacity building.

Preliminary assessment of potential for palaeoclimate data to inform water allocation modelling (2023)$8,017
Description
NRE are investigating their options for water allocation modelling into the future. They requested that I investigate the potential for available tree-ring series to reconstruct past rainfall and streamflow in eastern and northern Tasmania. If successful, information from the reconstructions about severity and length of dry and wet periods from the past can help inform water allocation strategies into the future. Preliminary findings suggest that the reconstructions contain useful information.

TasWater Climate Change Adaptation Science (2023 - 2024)$66,131
Description
TasWater is Tasmanias state-wide provider of water and sewerage services and due to our reliance on the environment for our operations we will be impacted by climate change. TasWater are developing our climate change adaptation plan and require a review of existing climate modelling/science to determine the best models and emissions scenarios to use when assessing the risk/vulnerability of existing assets and in the design of new assets. The review is to provide recommendations on which models TasWater should use as it prepares future climate change adaptation initiatives. Milestones include: 1.Engagement with key TasWater stakeholders to develop needs analysis 2.Literature review and data gap analysis including identification of additional research or analysis required 3.Draft Report 4.Review of draft report by TasWater 5.Scheduled meeting with key stakeholders (before finalisation of the report) 6.Amendments based on the review 7.Final Report 8.Final presentation to key stakeholders

The longevity of Macadamia trees. (2022)$0
Description
In this project we aim to determine whether we can identify and use growth bands in Macadamia trees to help determine tree age. We will use 14C - AMS dating to verify this. These dates will also enable an initial investigation of growth trajectories through time. The application is for access to ANSTO facilities and expertise, not for direct funding. It will be done in collaboration with experts in Macadamia research and conservation.

Collaborative Proposal: Understanding Trans-Hemispheric Modes of Climate Variability: A Novel Tree-Ring Data Transect spanning the Himalaya to the Southern Ocean (2021 - 2023)$1,200,000
Description
This project will re-analyse existing tree-ring samples from selected sites in the Eastern Hemisphere using blue light, a surrogate for wood density. Wood density has been shown to contain a stronger climate signal than ring width and the aim of the project is to obtain and exploit this signal across a transect from the Himalayas to Tasmania/New Zealand in order to improve our understanding of past dynamics of ENSO and the IOD in particular, and climate variability across the region more generally.

Using past climate extremes to guide infrastructure planning for the future (2020 - 2023)$793,589
Description
This project aims to analyse a 2000-year palaeoclimate record of single event and complex climate extremes toprovide a long-term context for observed changes in climate extremes over recent decades. This project expectsto generate new knowledge about long-term variability in the frequency and magnitude of climate extremes thatoccur on seasonal - decades time-scales. It also expects to provide information about complex extremes thatinvolve multiple types of impacts (e.g. drought followed by flood, simultaneous drought and fire). Expectedbenefits of the project include improved understanding of climate extremes and improved risk estimates for theimpacts of climate extremes on Australian government and industry infrastructure.

Research Supervision

I have supervised, or am currently supervising, two PhD students, two masters students and three Honours students. Three of the students I am currently supervising are international students.  I have also supported a range of Honours and Masters students with fieldwork, sample preparation and developing appropriate analyses of tree-ring data.  I have hosted and supervised several international students undertaking short research projects and have directed and managed dendrochronological fieldweeks for domestic and international students.

I am currently looking for two PhD students to work on projects associated with climate extremes recorded in palaeoproxy records.  Prospective students should have strong quantitative skills, some experience with programming (e.g. R, Matlab, Python). A strong background in using the English language is also required (IETLS ≥ 7). Experience with working with at least one kind of palaeo proxy record would be advantageous.
