A/Prof Ashley Townsend is a leader in the Central Science Laboratory (CSL) and Principal Research Fellow in the field of Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry, overseeing the CSL’s High Resolution ICP-MS facility. This unit currently houses a Thermo Fisher ELEMENT 2 instrument focused on solution analysis, supporting diverse research projects across the environmental, marine, Antarctic, chemical, geochemical and aquaculture areas: serving University and external users alike.

Ashley is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Royal Australian Chemical Institute, and is an Honorary Associate in the Discipline of Chemistry at the University of Tasmania.

Teaching Responsibilities

For over a decade Ashley has been closely involved in the design and delivery of advanced training units for postgraduate researchers by CSL staff, presented as part of the UTAS Graduate Certificate in Research program. He is the past Unit Co-ordinator for XGR504 “Advanced Analytical Methods – CSL” and for CSL involvement in XGR505 “Specialised Research Methods”.

Ashley also contributes specialist lectures on ICP-OES and ICP-MS to third year Chemistry candidates enrolled in KRA344 Advanced Analytical Techniques.

His teaching excellence has been regularly recognised through receipt of individual and team Teaching Merit Certificates and Commendations.

Ashley has held many senior positions with the Royal Australian Chemical Institute, the professional body of Chemists in Australia, both locally and nationally. These include periods as: Committee Member-TAS Branch (1990-2000; 2022-), Honorary Secretary-TAS Branch (1996-99; 2022-), Honorary President-TAS Branch (1998-99), State Representative on Executive Council (1999-2000), inaugural Deputy Chair/SE representative-National Board of Directors (2000-2003, following incorporation), Chair-General Administration and Membership Committee (2003-2004), Member-National Membership Assessment Committee (2008-2019), Member-RACI Futures Strategy and Planning group (2009), and Tasmanian Representative-Analytical and Environmental Chemistry Division (2015-2017).

His service to the discipline has been recognised through receipt of numerous awards, including:

2018 RACI Analytical and Environmental Division Citation (for “Unfaltering service to chemistry in Australia through the RACI, and enabling internationally leading environmental research through trace metal analysis”).
2003 RACI National Citation (for “The administration and advancement of the RACI at both the state and national levels”).
2000 RACI Tasmanian Branch President's Award (for “Service to the local Branch over many years”).

Ashley has and continues to serve on many senior University of Tasmania committees including: Council (Graduate Representative, 2000-01; Academic Representative, 2023-), North West Advisory Board (2002-05), Alumni Committee (2004-16; Chair 2011-16), Academic Senate (2008-19) and University Foundation Committee and Board (2017-). He is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Ashley’s voluntary commitment and leadership to Alumni activities was recognised in 2015 through receipt of a University of Tasmania’s Vice Chancellor’s Award for Outstanding Community Engagement.

Expertise

A/Prof Ashley Townsend is a Principal Research Fellow in the field of Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry, overseeing the CSL’s High Resolution ICP-MS facility. This unit currently houses a Thermo Fisher ELEMENT 2 instrument focused on solution analysis, supporting diverse research projects across the environmental, marine, Antarctic, chemical, geochemical and aquaculture areas: serving University and external users alike.

Ashley’s own research interests have a strong environmental focus and include developing monitoring procedures and analytical strategies for environmental assessment, the analysis of samples at low levels from local and other pristine wilderness areas, and the study of anthropogenically impacted regions.

He is the author/co-author of ~100 research articles, co-supervisor of 10 (current or completed) MSc and PhD candidates, independent referee of more than 350 articles and theses, and is a current or past member of several journal Editorial or Editorial Advisory Boards (including the Royal Society of Chemistry's Journal of Analytical Atomic Spectrometry and Analytical Methods; International Journal of Analytical Chemistry; and Science of the Total Environment). Ashley has presented numerous invited conference lectures (Japan (2008), China (2010 x 2), Korea (2012), Austria (2013), Australia (2013 and 19), USA (2015, 2020)).
