General Responsibilities

Dr Thomas Rodemann joined the CSL in 2006 and is appointed as Deputy Director of the CSL and Research Fellow of the Vibrational Spectroscopy & Elemental Analysis facilities.

Thomas is a PhD supervisor developing new chip and capillary based microreactors for organic synthesis. He is also working with researchers in the School of Chemistry investigating fundamental organometallic chemistry of palladium and platinum, with focus on aspects of their higher oxidation states.

In addition, Thomas is collaborating with the Tas Institute of Agriculture (TIA) and is an Honours student supervisor in the field of food safety investigating NIR predictions for microbial spoilage of fish. Thomas is also working with the eucalypt genetics research group in the School of Plant Science, developing NIR prediction models.

Previous research interests were in the field of medicinal chemistry with emphasis on the synthesis of novel nitrogen containing heterocycles as anticancer agents.

Building capacity in Regional Australia to enhance Australias Economy through research, training, and environmentally sustainable production of critical metals (2022 - 2024)$3,537,047
Description
This research project involves collaboration between STEM and Social Science researchers at the University of Tasmania (UTAS) and academic, industry, and government partners. Through its three research Elements, the project will provide novel tools for characterisation of critical metals deportment, optimise methods, and devise new workflows for critical metals processing, develop new waste management strategies, and deliver innovative community education, training, and outreach strategies that build a local, skilled jobs-ready local workforce for regional industry.

Rapid FTIR and Raman Imaging Capabilities (2020)$389,000
Description
This project aims to undertake fast probe-free biochemical/chemical imaging of heterogeneity within cells andmaterials surfaces with new FTIR and Raman imaging. It will generate new fundamental knowledge on: cellheterogeneity and dynamic processes; technologies for optimising cell printing; understanding toxicity ofmicroplastics; and protocols for measuring materials of relevance to catalysis. Expected outcomes include:interdisciplinary collaborations in new protocols for in vitro drug development; cell printing technologies;environmental impacts of microplastics; and materials design. Expected benefits include innovative approaches toearly stage drug design; improved environmental controls and advances in innovative materials.

Chemical and physical changes in fish feed (2017)$11,776
Description
A small scoping project to see if detect chemical changes in Fish Feed samples can be detected and determine the feasibility of developing IR models for feed retention. The investigators will attempt to develop methods and analyse and interpret generated data for 17 samples by NMR and Vibrational Spectroscopy for:* 4 formula variations (4 separate production runs) of one high retention product, including pre and post extrusion samples (= 8 samples).* 4 formula variations (4 separate production runs) of one low retention product, including pre and post extrusion samples (8 samples).* 1 pure starch sample

Geometallurgical applications for sorting by surface analysis: review of status (2016 - 2017)$42,600
Description
The project aims to assess the underlying opportunities for using surface methods in measuring ore moving on a belt to control sorting opportunities. It addresses the potential problems associated with rapid motion, irregular topography and dust distribution. It also considers opportunities to get by size sorting information from the data. These procedures already exist at varying levels from TRL stage 2 through to stage 4. The outcome of this proposal is to:a)Assess the advantages and disadvantages for each method including where in an ore sorting environment they are most competitiveb)suggest designs for a series of test that would move the most applicable methods to at least stage 5. to look for opportunities to maximise value in these methods.

Building and measuring the quality of fine Australian sparkling wines, through identification of the impact compounds responsible for autolytic character in sparkling wine, and novel winemaking tech (2016 - 2020)$1,161,527
Description
This project will contribute to impact compound identification for desirable flavours, mouthfeel and texture of fine Australian sparkling wines. A novel objective measure of sparkling juice and wine quality will be further developed which has the capacity to be adapted to in-line sensing with the potential to automate press fraction cut-offs, providing significant cost-savings to industry. Novel technologies to hasten the autolysis of yeast and therefore produce higher quality sparkling wines in a shorter amount of time will also be investigated.
