Dr Derek Choi-Lundberg is a senior lecturer in the Division of Medicine, School of Medicine, College of Health and Medicine. He chairs the Year 1 Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) management committee; is the current unit coordinator of Foundations of Medicine 1 (CAM101), the Year 1, Semester 1 unit of the MBBS; and was previous (2007-17) unit coordinator of Foundations of Medicine 2 (CAM102). He teaches gross anatomy, neuroanatomy, prenatal development and introductory physiology in the MBBS course, as well as applied clinical anatomy for health professionals in the Short Course Program. His main current areas of research are the scholarship of teaching and learning, medical education and anatomical sciences education. He is a member of the editorial board of BMC Medical Education (associate editor, Approaches to teaching and learning section).

Biography

Before joining the University of Tasmania in 2000, Derek was a post-doctoral fellow in the Neuroscience Department of Genentech (South San Francisco, CA, USA), where he researched the functions of the glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) family of neurotrophic factors and alpha-synuclein in the rodent nigrostriatal dopaminergic system. Derek's PhD from the Department of Neurobiology & Anatomy of the University of Rochester (NY, USA) was on gene therapy delivery of neurotrophic factors (specifically GDNF) for the treatment of Parkinson disease, studied in animal models.

Expertise

Derek's research focus is on the scholarship of teaching and learning in medical education and anatomical sciences education, including creation of learning cultures, technology-enhanced learning and teaching (e-learning), assessment practices, student learning experiences, student approaches to learning including self-directed learning and peer teaching and learning, and student engagement with learning resources. Various quantitative and qualitative research methodologies are used in these projects.

Research Themes

Derek’s research aligns to the University’s research themes of Creativity, Culture and Society; Data, Knowledge and Decisions; and Better Health.  In his teaching practice and research in medical education and anatomical sciences education, he explores the creation of learning cultures, technology-enhanced learning and teaching (e-learning), assessment practices, student learning experiences, student approaches to learning including self-directed learning and peer teaching and learning, and student engagement with learning resources.  He uses learning analytics and various quantitative and qualitative research methodologies in these projects.  With colleagues from the Royal Hobart Hospital, he was involved in initial testing of a new dual-channel laryngeal mask airway for use in upper gastrointestinal endoscopy.

Collaboration

Derek is involved in an international project to determine the demographic characteristics of body bequest program donors and their reasons for donating their bodies to science.

Current projects

Derek is conducting a number of research projects related to curriculum, technology-enhanced learning and teaching (e-learning), assessment practices, student learning experiences, student approaches to learning including self-directed learning and peer teaching and learning, and student engagement with learning resources.
