Co-design of an educational intervention to improve bowel cancer awareness and screening in a rural community (2022)$25,000
Description
Disease awareness within a community is known to help improve uptake of preventative measures. A previous study has suggested a deficiency in bowel cancer awareness in many Tasmania communities. The development of a community-based co-designed educational intervention will lead to improvement in bowel cancer awareness and uptake of bowel cancer screening. This co-design process will collaboratively explore barriers and solutions to poor bowel cancer awareness, poor information seeking behaviour and poor engagement with routine screening exercise. It is expected that the co-design process will lead to the development of educational resources or services bespoke to the rural community, thereby encouraging mass adoption and improvement in health outcomes.

Augmented Reality Remote Assistance system for managing rural patients (2021)$387,245
Description
Vietnam is facing overcrowding in central hospitals due to the disproportional distribution of health workforces in terms of both quantity and quality. In many rural and remote areas, the healthcare staff lack to access real-time, effective assistance, and realistic training provided by experts located centrally. It may lead to less effectiveness of health care services and additional costs for rural/ remote residents. UTAS Augmented Reality Remote Assistance system (UTAS-ARRA) is a solution developed by the Centre for Rural Health and the Human Interface Technology Laboratory, University of Tasmania. In this project, we will employ the UTAS-ARRA to improve the effectiveness of the remote situational tele-mentorship between central experts and rural/ remote less-experienced healthcare staff in Vietnam. The system aims to improve the response of rural/remote staff to manage patients under the assistance and guidance provided by central experts in real-time.

General Practitioners barriers and facilitators to implementing clinical practice guidelines on oral health during pregnancy (2021)$4,649
Description
This study aims to identify the barriers and facilitators for general practitioners (GPs) to implementing the oral health guidelines during pregnancy using a theoretical framework grounded in behavioural theory. Results from this project will guide the development and implementation of an intervention strategy to increase the use of the Department of Health and Ageing Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPG) for managing oral health during pregnancy in General Practice. Two key messages from the CPG have been chosen to target for this study. One is to advise pregnant women to have their oral health checked and treatment initiated, if required. The other key message is to provide advice on oral health to pregnant women experiencing nausea and vomiting. GPs have been chosen as the best target stakeholder to implement the CPG given their pivotal role as a key antenatal care provider; they often represent the first and regular contact for pregnant women and can make referrals to other health care practitioners. In addition, existing research has focused on oral health education interventions for midwives only. Despite being the primary antenatal care providers for pregnant women, research on intervention strategies for GPs to promote evidence-based practice in oral health during pregnancy is very limited.

Co-design of health and wellbeing services for LGBTQ+ individuals on Tasmania's east coast: advancing evidence, principles and practice (2020)$20,180
Description
The aim of the research is to identify priority health care needs (mental and physical) of LGBTiQ+ populations residing on the east coast of Tasmania and to gather evidence concerning the factors that either impede or support equity in access to quality and effective healthcare. Increased knowledge and understanding the barriers and enablers to optimal healthcare from the perspectives of LGBTIQ+ individuals and local health service providers would provide a strong basis in addressing current inequities and deficiencies in local health service provision for LGBTIQ communities living in rural areas.

Tackling the Real Tassie Devil: Towards Best Practice for Youth Suicide Prevention in Regional and Rural Tasmania (2020 - 2023)$61,500
Description
This proposed research, intends to build on findings from the local evaluation of National Suicide Prevention Trial activities in Tasmania and complement and build on existing bodies of work in the area, including the current Youth Suicide Prevention Plan for Tasmania, 2016-2020 (YSPPT) (Department of Health and Human Services, 2016).The two research questions that will guide the proposed PhD are: 1.What is currently known about best practice suicide prevention (SP) strategies for youth in rural and regional Tasmania?2.What additional strategies are recommended to fill any gaps in research and practice for youth SP in Tasmania? The first stage of the proposed research will seek to answer research question one, to determine what is currently known about best practice SP strategies for youth in rural and regional Tasmania. In this stage, findings from the local evaluation of the NSPT in Tasmania will be synthesised with findings from those NSPT sites specifically targeting young people across Australia, along with current literature and state and national policies and programs for youth SP. The second research question, exploring what additional strategies are recommended to fill any gaps in research and practice for youth SP in Tasmania, will be answered in stages two and three of the PhD research. At the second stage, a mixed-methods research approach will utilise focus groups, interviews and surveys, to further explore key areas and gaps in research identified in stage one. Participants to be recruited will include community members with lived experience of youth suicide and key stakeholders who have experience working with at-risk youth and young people, including health and welfare service providers and those representing government departments concerned with policy development. The third stage of the proposed PhD will answer question two through the development of recommendations and resources regarding best practice SP methods specifically for youth in regional and rural Tasmania. These recommendations will be made available for use by Australian Rotary Health and the Rotary Club of Deloraine, local, state, and federal government agencies, non-government agencies, and other relevant service organisations working with youth SP in Tasmania and across Australia, designed to complement existing bodies of work in the area, including the Youth Suicide Prevention Plan for Tasmania.

The Elders community wellbeing project: A pilot study. (2019)$9,840
Description
The aim of the project is to examine how Elders and/or seniors contribute to the intergenerational wellbeing of Aboriginal people in a rural Tasmanian community. Working with the Circular Head Aboriginal Corporation (CHAC), our project will employ participatory action research (PAR), an approach recognised as a culturally appropriate and respectful for undertaking research in partnership with Aboriginal communities. Between 10-12 Elders will be recruited through community kinship networks to share their wisdom and knowledge of health and community wellbeing through individual interviews and/or 'yarning circle' discussions. The results will provide Aboriginal leaders with a roadmap to inform and improve their community health agenda, based on the wisdom and knowledge of Elders.

SMART (Silver fluoride Modified Atraumatic Restorative Treatment) Clinical Trial (2018 - 2019)$69,722
Description
Managing tooth decay of primary teeth in young children using silver diamine fluoride to reduce cost, fear and pain. The aim of the project is to determine the best, and least invasive, practice to manage tooth decay of baby teeth in young (0-8 years) children using silver diamine fluoride (SDF). SDF is an antimicrobial liquid that can be brushed on to cavities quickly and easily, to painlessly and noninvasively stop the spread of cavities and even prevent tooth decay. We will compare the: *tooth decay arrest and prevention abilities;*relative cost effectiveness;*clinical costs to the public health sector;*acceptability to the child and their parent/carer, and*the ease of treatment for the dental clinician of:(1) 5% Sodium fluoride varnish (NaF) - current practice is application every 3 months; or(2) 38% silver diamine fluoride (SDF) and potassium iodide (PI) and a sealant over the cavity - this practice is called Zero Invasion Dentistry (ZID) and is 1 treatment and will last for 12 months.

Improving the Health and Well-Being of Tasmanian Aboriginal People - One Community's Focus on Individualised Support, Specialised Training, and Leadership in Dementia Care (2017 - 2019)$834,757
Description
This project enables 10 members of the Circular Head Aboriginal community to study in the award-winning, online Bachelor of Dementia Care program. The program will include completion of a Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing, Home and Community) providing within-community experience with adults with dementia. This innovative coupling of authentic, culturally-appropriate experiential learning with broad and deep academic knowledge about dementia and evidence-based care will provide students with a work-related qualification embedded within a culturally-appropriate university education. This will increase the capacity of this Aboriginal community to provide care for its members with dementia, a documented concern. It will also establish a pathway to improve students' access to and success in higher education and the professional workforce, including academia, and counteract the negative influences of rurality and low socio-economic status on educational opportunity.
