Dr Jamie Chapman is a lecturer in Human Anatomy in the School of Medicine. He is coordinator of first year Human Biology and coordinates and teaches histology in the first two years of Medicine. While his research now largely focuses on technology enhanced learning and teaching, Dr Chapman also has expertise in biological light and electron microscopy techniques. He has been recognised for his excellence and innovation in teaching through national (Office of Learning and Teaching) and local (Vice-Chancellor) citations for outstanding contributions to student learning and is an Apple Distinguished Educator.

Biography

Dr Chapman undertook a BSc at the University of Adelaide, majoring in Anatomy and Histology. He achieved first class Honours in reproductive biology of marsupials and went on to complete a PhD focussing on marsupial egg coats and their structure and function. During his PhD, Dr Chapman used a lot of microscopy techniques including routine transmission and scanning electron microscopy (EM), cryo-EM, immuno-EM, routine light microscopy, as well as phase contrast, fluorescence and differential interference contrast microscopy.

In 2001, Dr Chapman moved from Adelaide to run the EM Unit at the Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH) – a joint position between the RHH and Department of Pathology for the University of Tasmania. Here he worked for 3 years as an EM technician, while tutoring in Human Biology part time in the Department of Anatomy and Physiology. In 2004, Dr Chapman began as a lecturer, predominantly tutoring and/or demonstrating in Human Biology, Gross Anatomy and Histology.

In 2006 Dr Chapman was employed as a tenured lecturer in Human Anatomy and soon took over the position of coordinator of histology teaching within the School. Predominantly coordinating histology units in the BMedRes, Dr Chapman also lectured and coordinated histology in the MBBS programme until becoming coordinator of Human Biology in 2014/2015.

Expertise

Dr Chapman's research expertise is in technology enhanced learning and teaching, including e-learning, m-learning, blended learning, eBooks, the use of multimedia and the flipped classroom. Dr Chapman also has expertise in a number of microscopy techniques, including preparation of cells/tissues for routine light and electron microscopy, immuno-microscopy (both light and electron microscopy) and histological techniques.

Research Themes

Dr Chapman's research interests align with the university's research theme of Better Health and have primarily focused on the cell biology of marsupial reproduction and, in particular, the structure and functions of the egg, its surrounding vestments (perivitelline space, zona pellucida, mucoid coat, shell membrane) and the contribution to these from the upper reproductive tracts. He has especially been interested in the glycoconjugate composition of the zona pellucida during oocyte development and its changes during transit through the oviduct. Much of his research involves electron microscopy, his main area of expertise.

Dr Chapman has also been involved in describing the innate immunity of the olfactory region. He received an IRGS grant in 2007 to look at the ability of olfactory ensheathing cells to phagocytose bacteria and thereby prevent infection of the CNS through this route, which involved co-supervision of an Honours student with Associate Professor Inn Chuah. He supervised an Honours project in 2009 and obtained another IRGS grant in 2010 that funded an Honours student in 2010 to investigate and characterise the role of mucins in preventing infection within the olfactory region.

Recently, Dr Chapman's research interests have also included research on technology enhanced learning and teaching (TELT). Specifically, Dr Chapman and his colleague Dr Anne-Marie Williams have been interested in the effectiveness of virtual microscopy on the learning of histology for medical students. They have been correlating the use of the virtual microscopy tool, the Digital Slidebox, with performance in histology questions in exams.

Drs Chapman and Williams have also been run a longitudinal study of mobile device use by students within the School of Medicine and Faculty of Health, which was supported by a UTAS Teaching Development Grant in 2014. In 2015, Dr Chapman, Dr Williams and Ms Tracy Douglas represent the University of Tasmania as a partner institution in a $225 000 OLT grant, run by the University of Adelaide, to develop a guide (FlipKit) for people teaching in health sciences on how to introduce the flipped classroom into their teaching repertoire.

Collaboration

Dr Chapman is currently involved in an Office of Learning and Teaching project ($225K) entitled 'Translating Concept into Practice: Enabling First-Year Health Sciences Teachers to Blueprint Effective Flipped Learning Approches' with the University of Adelaide (Dr Sophie Karanicolas, Dr Catherine Snelling, Dr Mario Ricci, Dr Rachel Gibson) and Australian Catholic University that looks to develop resources for academics introducing the flipped classroom experiences to their teaching.

Dr Chapman, through his expertise in electron microscopy, has collaborated with different neuroscience researchers within the School of Medicine, Menzies Institute of Medical Research and Wicking Centre. Collaborators have included Professor James Vickers, Associate Professor Inn Chuah, Dr Anna King and Dr Matthew Kirkcaldie. Dr Chapman also offers assistance in other projects including those with Dr Louise Prentice. Dr Chapman has continued his collaboration with his PhD supervisor Professor Bill Breed at the University of Adelaide, looking at the cell structure and function of reproductive organs in marsupials.

Awards

Grants & Funding

Dr Chapman is currently involved in an Office of Learning and Teaching project ($225K) entitled 'Translating Concept into Practice: Enabling First-Year Health Sciences Teachers to Blueprint Effective Flipped Learning Approches' with the University of Adelaide (Dr Sophie Karanicolas, Dr Catherine Snelling, Dr Mario Ricci, Dr Rachel Gibson) and Australian Catholic University that looks to develop resources for academics introducing the flipped classroom experiences to their teaching.

In 2014 Dr Chapman was awarded a Category D Teaching Development grant with Dr Anne-Marie Williams and Mr Gerry Kregor to investigate the use of mobile devices by students within the Faculty of Health.Dr Chapman has also been involved in research of the olfactory region and the role of the mucosa in preventing infection and has obtained two IRGS grants to fund Honours projects.

Translating concept into practice: enabling first-year health sciences teachers to blueprint effective flipped learning approaches (2015)$225,000
Description
address a gap in the capacity of first-yearhealth sciences teachers to effectively transfer flipped classroom concepts intoquality teaching practice through the collaborative development of a peer-reviewedFlipkit. The team will tackle the assumption that flipped classrooms in healthsciences produce improved learning outcomes through comprehensively evaluatingtheir effectiveness across a broad range of courses. Pilot projects conducted by thepartner universities and the outcomes from a 2013 flipped learning OLT grant willinform this project.

Longitudinal Tracking and Reporting of Mobile Computing Use by Faculty of Health Science Students (2014)$3,671
Description
The introduction of innovative e- and m-learning strategies has been suggested as a mechanism to embrace technology and deliver flexible curricula at UTAS. E-learning encompasses a large range of innovations including learning management systems, e-portfolios and a general move towards a greater online teaching presence. Mlearning (or mobile learning) has more focus on innovations related to mobile computing devices such as smartphones, tablet and laptop computers. The question is just how ready are our students for the introduction of such innovations? We aim to establish and embed into practice a longitudinal mobile computing survey of students of the Faculty of Health Science. We will investigate their current experiences of e- and m-learning and any expectations that they have of these technologies during their education. This information will allow the Faculty to develop and implement more efficient, and effectively delivered, blended curricula that is aligned with the Faculty's and University's Open to Talent Strategy and Action for students.

Dr Chapman has co-supervised 3 Honours projects on olfactory biology with Associate Professor Inn Chuah. These projects have involved a lot of microscopy work, both light and electron microscopy, looking at the epithelium and mucins expressed in these regions using immuno-fluorescence and immuno-electron microscopy.
