Dr Kate-Ellen Elliott is a Senior Lecturer in Clinical Psychology in the School of Psychological Sciences, and an affiliate of the Wicking Dementia Research and Education Centre at the University of Tasmania. Her field is in geropsychology, particularly in older adults’ psychological adjustment to health conditions. Her work expands across the areas of aged and dementia care, workforce and older adult mental health, psycho-oncology, as well as implementation and translational health services research.
Biography
Before joining the University of Tasmania, Kate-Ellen worked in public, private and not-for-profit organisations delivering psychological services to people with mental health conditions and chronic illness and their families.
Kate-Ellen received her PhD in Psychology in 2012. She then worked as a post-doctoral fellow at the Wicking Dementia Research and Education Centre translating a model of interdisciplinary health student placements into aged care homes in five sites across Australia. She joined the teaching team as a Lecturer in Dementia Care in 2014 and developed and delivered new curriculum. She then held a National Health and Medical Research Council and Australian Research Council Dementia Development Fellowship from 2016 - 2022 to develop and test Work4Dementia, which is an evidence-based intervention that aims to build capacity and resilience for the Australian dementia care workforce.
In 2022, Kate-Ellen joined the School of Psychological Sciences to contribute to curriculum design in the postgraduate psychology and counselling programs. She continues to lead and explore new partnerships between psychology and aged care to enhance training and outcomes for older adult mental health.

Teaching expertise
Kate-Ellen trains the future health workforce with a focus on chronic illness, mental health, ageing, age-related conditions and professional practice. Her expertise is an essential part of award-winning higher education programs, and certification and accreditation (Bachelor of Dementia Care, Masters in Clinical Psychology). Her ten years of teaching experience includes fully online, as well as blended online and face-to-face delivery. Kate-Ellen is a Research Higher Degree and Clinical Supervisor. She mentors provisional psychologists and other health and caring professionals who are interested in workforce and older adult mental health.

Research Themes
Kate-Ellen’s research aligns with the University's research theme of Better Health. Her research looks at relationships between health professionals, people with chronic conditions and organisational systems that influence quality care, particularly in aged and dementia care. She assesses wellbeing of health workers, the workplace, people with chronic conditions, and their family members. Her research tells us about the best ways to develop and support the health workforce and enhance care for people with chronic conditions including older adults. Kate-Ellen’s research guides her design of new workforce development interventions. She also focuses on finding innovative ways to build expertise in psychogeriatrics to improve access to psychosocial care for older adults.
Collaboration
Kate-Ellen collaborates with colleagues from interdisciplinary backgrounds (allied health; psychology, pharmacy, nursing, medicine as well as business and management) mainly to enhance mental health outcomes in workforces and older adults. She works in cooperation with local, national and international scholars and industry organisations. In partnership, Kate-Ellen has led and contributed networks across several universities in Australia, the United Kingdom and North America and advisory groups on aged care workforce health and wellbeing.

- I am poised to apply the findings from 6 years of my research to solve the pressing issue of how to effectively develop and support the dementia care workforce. I aim to apply my clinical psychology expertise to offer unique insights to lead the way forward in translational dementia care services research. I will conduct two studies that aim to improve the capacity and resilience of the dementia care workforce. Previously, I identified a new construct (now published), occupational communion (OC), which has implications for retaining dementia care workers in their jobs for longer. OC facilitates a sense of belonging based in social interaction at work essential for positive coping with high job demands. Results from my postdoctoral studies showed that OC is a valid and reliable construct. OC has been tested in a theoretical model showing social interaction with clients and colleagues can influence positive ways to cope with job demands such as isolation or grief and loss. The current research fellowship and proposal will test the capacity of OC to inform the development of an innovative evidence-based intervention (Work4Dementia). A pilot test will determine the acceptability and feasibility of new Work4Dementia resources in 2 aged and dementia care organisations in Tasmania. A trial will determine the efficacy of Work4Dementia in 4 new organisational settings across Australia. Work4Dementia will ultimately reduce job stress and subsequent turnover, enhance work engagement and improve quality care outcomes for people with dementia and their families. This program will result in a potentially translatable outcome for the major public health issue of dementia, that I am ideally placed to lead.

- Managing chronic respiratory conditions in residential aged care is challenging, particularly for residents with dementia. In pilot studies, we have shown that respiratory conditions are often underdiagnosed and undertreated. Carers are well placed to observe and respond to changes in respiratory health but their knowledge of respiratory care is limited and the recognition, treatment and management of respiratory conditions is not well understood. In collaboration with Aged Care staff and respiratory experts, we will develop an educational module: Optimising Respiratory Care in Dementia (ORCID), to address this deficit in knowledge. Once developed, we will examine the impact this has on the dementia and respiratory knowledge of a group of carers and nurses in a pilot trial. A better approach to respiratory care in dementia will ultimately improve the quality of life of residents and allow the development of a systematic approach to observation, review and referral for residents with respiratory needs.

- The primary aim of the project is to test an adapted evidence-based model of interprofessional health placements found to beeffective for nursing, medicine and paramedicine, for the discipline of psychology in a residential aged care setting, and examine the organisational factors that influence implementation and sustainability. A secondary aim of the project is to explore the acceptability, feasibility and preliminary efficacyof psychosocial care for older adults delivered by supervised provisional psychologists.
