Dr Kiran Ahuja is a Senior Research Fellow in the University’s School of Health Sciences. She has been with UTAS since 2001 and has been a research-intensive member of staff since completing her PhD in 2006.

Dr Ahuja has several different roles at the University.

One part of her work is contributing to research investigating the effects of various foods and spices on heart disease and diabetes risk factors.

‘Regular chilli intake may help with controlling blood glucose and insulin levels in people who are pre-diabetic. We are now expanding this research to understand the mechanisms by which chilli controls for glucose.’

Dr Ahuja also contributes to a range of fascinating projects outside the area of nutrition, through the application of her biostatistical skills.

‘I love statistics, or what I call “playing with numbers”. At the moment, I provide statistical support for projects in medicine, health science, nursing and computing. I help with the number crunching, which allows the researchers to understand the data, to see patterns in the data, and then interpret the results.

‘I am currently also involved in a data linkage project and working with a paediatric respiratory physician. It’s a very interesting project… looking for links between babies’ birth information – things like weight, length, mother’s smoking behaviour – and their lung function at 6–8 years of age. By linking data gathered at different times we can test for birth factors and their impacts on health in later life.’

The other major part of Dr Ahuja’s role is the coordination of the Graduate Certificate in Research for all PhD and Master’s candidates at UTAS. In this role she gets to meet every new candidate at the University.

‘Research training is my passion. I want to teach people to conduct ethically, scientifically, and morally valid research. It’s satisfying to prepare the new generation of researchers.’

In addition to her research and research training at UTAS, Dr Ahuja has been actively involved in the Nutrition Society of Australia over the past decade. She is Honorary Secretary of the NSA and member of the executive team. This group of scientists, academics and people from industry are involved in sharing nutrition science and research in Australia, promoting the field, with a goal to increase and communicate the scientific value and relevance of nutrition science.

Dr Ahuja is Research Fellow at the School of Health Sciences, University of Tasmania, Australia. She works in the area of nutrition and health. In particular, her work focuses on the investigating the effects of foods and spices on the risk factors for cardiovascular disease.

Determinants of body composition during postpartum period (2023)$10,000

Description: Most women never return to their pre-pregnancy weight after giving birth-some find it hard to lose weight, while many gain weight. If they enter another pregnancy with this excessive weight, they carry more weight not only in the postpartum period but also in the preconception period of the next pregnancy.A body composition with excess fat mass is often linked to an increased risk of metabolic diseases like diabetes, whereas a greater fat-free mass protects against chronic diseases. However, limited research is available on the association of preconception, pregnancy, and postpartum factors with postpartum body composition.We will first summarise this limited global literature and then test the relation of the identified factors with the body composition of Tasmanian women in postpartum. This work will help find targeted strategies that can be individualised to the local context to improve body composition and prevent short- and long-term adverse health outcomes in future pregnancies.

Cognition in multiple sclerosis: Associations with gut-brain biomarkers and exploration of cognitive symptom change in response to a nutrition intervention (2021 - 2022)$57,683

Description: Cognitive dysfunction is common in people with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and can cause significant disruption to everyday functioning and quality of life. Peculiarities in gut microbial composition and function have also been found in people with MS and there is now a recognised link between the gut microbiome and kynurenine pathway (KP) regulation, as well as KP dysregulation, increased inflammation and neuronal death. This research aims to examine whether cognitive dysfunction and cognitive changes over time (approximately a 4-year period, time 1 data was collected in 2016/2017) are associated with increased pro-inflammatory KP biomarkers and an aberrant gut microbiota among individuals with MS. We will also conduct a pilot study investigating whether and to what extent a nutrition intervention (e.g., probiotics) may influence cognitive impairment in MS, by modulating KP function via the gut microbiome.

Multidisciplinary approach to antenatal care to improve the health of pregnant women and their offspring: Healthy Outcomes for the Future (HOFF) program. (2019 - 2021)$62,606

Description: : The primary objective of this project is to implement an evidence based, multidisciplinary, effective model of care and lifestyle interventions (Healthy Outcomes for the Future (HOFF) program) as part of routine care provided at antenatal clinics in the rural North West (NW) Tasmania to improve the health of mothers and their offspring. It is intended that the implementation of a suite of dietary, exercise and mental health interventions will curtail frequent occurrences of excess gestational weight gain (GWG), attenuate the incidence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and reduce adverse outcomes at birth (for both mother and child). The proposed research will utilise a co-design approach, amalgamating contributions from clinicians, research and primary care staff from North West Regional Hospital (NWRH), obesity researchers from University of Tasmania (UTAS) and all women who present at antenatal clinics in NWRH and Mersey Community Hospital (MCH). Implementation of the proposed research will primarily be guided by the recent findings of the scoping research conducted into the status of the antenatal care in NW Tasmania (Unpublished data Sharon L). Further to this, a blueprint for a sustainable antenatal care program will be generated in partnership with key stakeholders at NWRH, UTAS and the Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH). Pertinent implementation strategies will be adopted from the Health in Preconception, Pregnancy and Post-Birth (HIPPP) currently in practice at RHH, with the overarching view of strategically prioritising implementation research, translation of research to practice, capacity building and collaboration between clinicians, researchers and patients. Specific Aims of the proposed research include: 1. Continuous monitoring and improvement of antenatal care practices regarding lifestyle risk factors and maternal obesity during pregnancy in the NW. 2. Develop a pathway to improve the rate of glucose tolerance tests (GTT) 'not done' during pregnancy and identify alternative diagnostic methods for those at high risk. 3. Intervene on the already identified implementation enablers and barriers of integrated antenatal care within the NWRH and MCH settings. 4. Comparing the effectiveness of providing multidisciplinary lifestyle support in early pregnancy with standard care, in the context of reducing GWG, birth complications, postnatal outcomes and GDM (including GDM diagnosis). 5. Implementation of meaningful and applicable modifications in the antenatal care program, while lowering (or at least not increasing) the burden on clinicians at NWRH and MCH. 6. To determine if GWG is associated with infant weight and body composition (during the first 6 months of life), and immediate and long-term adverse outcomes in the babies. 7. To determine whether the lifestyle interventions will lead to sustained improvement postnatal dietary intake and physical activity. 8. Co-design a blueprint for the sustainable best-practice model to promote a healthy lifestyle and facilitate healthy weight gain during pregnancy. 9. Evaluate the lifestyle intervention implementation and patient outcomes, and provide detailed knowledge on the adoption, reach, engagement, and maintenance of the intervention elements within clinical practice.

Prevalence of asthma-chronic obstructive pulmonary disease overlap syndrome (ACOS) in north-west Tasmanian population: understanding and translation to early therapy (2019 - 2020)$105,868

Description: Asthma and COPD are typically characterised as separate diseases with different clinical features, pathophysiological mechanisms and strategies for treatment. Some respiratory patients appear to have features of both diseases, i.e. a history of asthma and usually smoking, with marked fixed airflow obstruction, which is termed asthma-chronic obstructive pulmonary disease overlap syndrome (ACOS). Exacerbation rates are also quite high in ACOS patients compared to asthma or COPD alone. There is very little known about the disease and it is difficult to manage clinically because the underlying disease mechanisms and prevalence is poorly understood. There is high prevalence of undiagnosed asthma, COPD and even more for ACOS in the North-West (NW) Tasmanian population, where smoking rates are quite high. People from the low socio-economic population in particular experience considerably greater mortality and morbidity from such respiratory diseases compared to rest of the community. Respiratory lung function lab has now been established in the NW for identification of lung diseases. We now wish to apply for funding with an objective to identify the burden of ACOS in the NW population to inform clinical practice for better management of this ill-understood condition.

Preventative Health Research in Rural and Regional Communities (Tasmania) (2019 - 2021)$2,400,000

Description: An ageing Australia will increasingly impact social, health and economic activity, as exemplified in complex disorders such as dementia. Obesity is also increasing at a rapid rate and is a major antecedent risk factor for a range of chronic illnesses. Both conditions will be a particular challenge for rural and regional communities as they have the highest rates of related risk factors and chronic illness, and also relatively reduced access to specialist medical services and preventative health programs. This proposal focusses on dementia and obesity in north-west Tasmania, developing innovative initiatives to manage and reduce risk of these conditions, which will reduce medical procedures overall including presentations to hospital. The program involves two major projects: the Island Study Linking Ageing and Neurodegenerative Disease (ISLAND) and the Critical Age Periods for Impacting Obesogenic Lifestyles (CAPITOL) study. The ISLAND study will involve a pragmatic clustered randomised controlled on interventions for major potentially modifiable risk factors for dementia, including obesity, physical activity, diabetes, smoking, hypertension, depression and cognitive stimulation/education, most of which are antecedents to chronic illness. The CAPITOL study will facilitate a transdisciplinary professional network to build a community-specific, sustainable approach to supporting children and families in relation to physical health and wellbeing. This project will identify enabling contextual factors which influence engagement in healthy physical play practices; foster buy-in from families (at multiple entry points); improve school readiness (through enhancing outcomes for children (0-8 years) in the AEDC domain of physical health and wellbeing), and generate sustainable communities of practice. North-west Tasmania is an ideal 'test-bed' to develop preventative health strategies that are relevant and scalable to other Australian rural and regional communities.

Objective measurements of workplace sedentary behaviour (2018)$10,260

Description: Prior work on Exertime, a workplace e-health solution, demonstrates its ability to improve measures of health via the delivery of prompted movement breaks during working hours (e.g., Mainsbridge et al. 2015). It is unknown what causes these health improvements. Putatively, the Exertime software intervention changes the amount and pattern of sedentary behaviour and physical activity in the workplace; this causes improvements in markers of health. However, there is no evidence to support this hypothesis as no quantitative measure of behaviour has been collected in conjunction with the Exertime intervention. This quantitative sensor based data is crucial to establish the connection between behaviour change and health improvements. Crucially, for the first time, it will provide evidence of the magnitude of the changes in sedentary behaviour needed to improve health. Thus, providing an empirical basis for guidelines on reducing sedentary behaviour to improve health. To validate this new technology, physical activity will be measured for a period of seven days at each time point through the use of ActivPal accelerometers. These will be fitted and worn day and night for the entire seven day period. These trackers are reliable and valid and are currently considered the gold standard for physical activity monitoring. Our plan is to first conduct a small validity and feasibility study utilising current Exertime users at UTAS, for which we already have ethics approval.

Epithelial mesenchymal transition (EMT) in the lungs and airways in Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) (2018 - 2019)$48,354

Description: IPF is a highly destructive lethal disease of the lungs, but with very little information available on the underlying mechanisms. We are going to explore the process of epithelial cell plasticity (or EMT) and a similar process in blood vessel endothelium (Endo-MT). This work will lead to improved diagnosis and treatment of this nasty lung condition. The project brings together well-characterized patients from the Australian IPF registry, blood samples we have collected from them and innovative techniques to reset thinking about the underlying pathological processes active in this illness.

Mobile Solution to Encourage Clients to Exercise at Home (2016 - 2017)$5,523

Description: The aim of the project is to engage clients in home exercise programs to improve their rehabilitation outcomes, through the development of a targeted smart phone application with individualised exercises, diary and interface with clinicians. The application will allow the clinician to take a video of the client performing exercises on their own phone, which they can then refer to when completing the exercises at home to ensure they are doing them correctly. A diary component of the application will allow the dose to be set and allow adherence to exercise to be monitored remotely by the clinician. The application will make it easier for the clinician to monitor and supervise exercise between visits, with flow on benefits to the client's progress.

Poor Diet and Nutrition, Food Security and Obesity Healthy Eating Local Mapping and Local Solutions Project (2013 - 2015)$350,000
