Supporting safe pet ownership in housing the homeless (2020)$5,000
Description
This project aims to explore the role of pets in caring for the mental health needs of homeless people and those at risk of homelessness in the City ofSydney and options for keeping pets with their owners. Research has already reported both physiological and psychological benefits derived from petownership. Homeless pet owners report higher levels of attachment to their pets than among the non-homeless population and derive a sense ofresponsibility, companionship and social identity from this. Pets have been shown to decrease substance misuse, suicidal ideation and suicideattempts. Often accommodation and health services for the homeless and those at risk of homelessness do not include options for pets, forcing achoice between housing and care, and their animal. This project would explore issues and solutions for keeping homeless people and their petstogether.

Pet ownership and mental health (2020)$5,000
Description
The relationship between humans and domesticated pets is an historic one which has the potential for positive behavioural and mental health outcomes. Relationships between an owner and a pet can be profound. There can be challenges which include housing, social connectedness, access to health and social services, employability, and opportunity. Exploring the way in which humans interact with pets to protect them, sustain them, draw emotional support from them and vice versa, are integral to understanding the challenges and opportunities that can be derived from pet ownership in different context. This understanding can be leveraged to maximise services and opportunities that can harness these benefits and to mitigate challenges that are experienced.

Trauma-Informed Care in Non-traditional Settings: Developing a TIC model for people experiencing mental distress in the burns care setting. (2019)$9,873
Description
The project will deliver a specific model of TIC to promote and protect the mental health of burns patients within a burns centre or ward. The major outcome would be the development of a workable model for clinical delivery via a pilot implementation. Data would be gathered on the findings of recent studies into the application of TIC in general care settings, particularly burns care. The TIC model would also be informed by stakeholders, including mental health professionals, burns care staff, patients and advocates and trauma specialists. This would allow first-hand perspectives on the workability of current models and practices and discussions of means to improve mental health outcomes. This model and proposed pilot intervention would allow data to be gathered on the proposed model in regard to its relevance, capacity to be taught to existing burns care staff, ability to be implemented with regard to existing processes and protocols, and the likelihood of positive mental health outcomes. The responses from this engagement would then be analysed using thematic analysis to determine if the major themes presented offer new insights into service design and delivery and how best to inform the new guidelines. This initiative can then be used as the foundations for further design of TIC services. Post-project data could be gathered if the model were trialled by a partner organisation. This we anticipate would form the basis of further grant applications from the team of researchers developed through this grant.

An analysis of the experiences and motivations of clients accessing Sydney's Medically Supervised Injecting Centre and the factors facilitating or inhibiting service uptake and retention (2016)$7,000
Description
Sydney's Medically Supervised Injecting Centre (MSIC) has operated since 2001. Like other supervised injection facilities (SIFs) or drug consumption rooms (DCR), it provides a place where people who inject drugs (PWIDs) can safely inject pre-obtained drugs. Such harm reduction services aim to lower fatal overdose and HIV and HCVtransmission rates, improve PWIDs' health and wellbeing through referral into treatment programs, and increase public amenity and safety by reducing street-based drug use (Hedrich et al. 2010; IWG 2006; NCHECR 2007; Salmon et al. 2007, 2010; Thein et al. 2005). An evaluation of the MSIC (the only service of this type in Australia)confirmed that it 'positively impacts on clients, has a high level of support from local residents and businesses, has not been shown to cause an increase in local crime or drug use and saves at least $658,000 per annum over providing similar health outcomes through other means in the health system' (KPMG 2010, p. ix). Still, challenges exist for SIFs such as the MSIC in delivering harm reduction to the most marginalised and vulnerable of PWIDs.
