Professor Turner is a practicing General Surgeon with interests in gastrointestinal, trauma and minimally invasive surgery.
He also has a strong interest in epidemiology, as it relates to surgical diseases and procedures.
Biography
Before commencing at the University of Tasmania in June 2009, he was Associate Professor in Surgery at James Cook University, Cairns, Queensland.
Teaching
Teaching expertise
Teaching activities include lectures, small group tutorials and bedside teaching. Professor Turner is particularly interested in developing the diagnostic and decision-making skills of students, as well as ensuring a level of procedural competence necessary to begin medical practice. With regard to the latter, he is currently collaborating to create a teaching program for sensitive men's examinations.
Dr Turner feels that it is important for all students to be imbued with expertise in surgical sciences, even if they do not intend to pursue Surgery as a career. However, those who do should be encouraged accordingly.

Pancreatitis in Tasmania: Quantifying the epidemiological and economic burden of disease (2022)$22,703
- Description
- We will use data linkage to characterise the epidemiological and economic burden of pancreatitis in Tasmania by determining:*incidence of acute pancreatitis (AP) and prevalence of chronic pancreatitis (CP) over a 10-year period*health-related outcomes: death, years of life lost, disability-adjusted life years, specific complications.*resource utilisation: length of stay, emergency presentations, intensive care admission, pathology tests, diagnostic imaging, therapeutic interventions, medication use.Additional studies to be generated include:*biological, clinical, and social determinants of aforementioned outcomes*compliance with best-practice management guidelines *developing a novel, service delivery-based classification of the pancreatitis based on patient journey and resource consumption.

- Older Tasmanians undergoing emergency surgery are at high risk of complications and of subsequently needing rehabilitation or nursing home placement following discharge. Pancreatitis in Tasmania: Quantifying the epidemiological and economic burden of disease. (2021)$24,933

- State-wide hospital and pathology data will be linked to provide a researchable dataset of Tasmanian pancreatitis cases from 2007-2018. A comprehensive picture will be obtained for disease burden pertaining to epidemiology, resource utilisation, established guideline compliance, and the determinants of these. The results will inform future quality improvement strategies.

Promoting mental health in high-risk occupations: A feasibility study to promote optimism, hope, resilience and self-efficacy in junior doctors. (2019)$51,547
- Description
- In collaboration with Menzies Institute for Medical Research, TasNetworks will jointly fund a feasibility study to promote psychological capital in medical students and junior doctors in Hobart. The intervention will be implemented through facilitated, group-based workshops. Online surveys will assess medical students and JMOs in all three group at baseline, at intervention completion, and at 6-month follow up. If the content and design of the intervention are proven successful, findings of this trial will inform the development of a state-wide roll out to medical students and junior doctors located in Tasmania's North and North West, and its provision to other employee groups populations including TasNetworks staff.

Assessing the HR-HPV types in stored cervical excision samples for comparison with anal HR-HPV carriage in TasGANS (2016)$10,000

- We previously showed a significant association of post-toilet front-to-back and dabbing behaviours with occurrence of anal cancer precursors and cancer-causing HPV types. We want to substantiate the within-person autoinoculation route by comparing HR-HPV types present in stored cervical excision samples with those found in TasGANS anal samples.
