Anya Reading leads the Compute Earth / Physical Sciences Group at the School of Natural Sciences (Physics), University of Tasmania as a Professor in the College of Sciences and Engineering. She serves as the Associate Head of Research for the School of Natural Sciences.

Reading’s innovative approaches to data science build on a foundation of experimental field seismology in challenging regions such as Antarctica and outback Australia. Special interest areas include interdisciplinary research and public engagement with science, mathematics and interdisciplinary ideas. She is an experienced educator and student research advisor and makes numerous service and policy development contributions to scientific research at university, state, national and international levels. Reading was awarded a Fulbright Senior Scholarship in 2016/17.

Biography

Anya received her BSc (Hons) in geophysics from the University of Edinburgh, UK, and was awarded her PhD from the University of Leeds, UK, for research on subduction zone structure in New Zealand. Following five years in marine and land-based geophysics with the British Antarctic Survey as a Higher Scientific Officer, she joined the University of Edinburgh as a Lecturer in 1998.  In 2000 she moved to Australia as a Research Fellow at ANU, being promoted to Fellow (Senior Lecturer) in 2006.  She joined UTAS as an academic staff member in 2007, was promoted to Associate Professor in the 2014 round, and to Professor in the 2016 round.

Reading founded the Compute Earth Group within the School of Natural Sciences in 2010.  Her group carries out research in, global/regional geophysics, glacier geophysics and industry-relevant topics with a strong element of technology transfer. Fundamental research areas are focussed on using seismology to form 3D images of the former continents of Gondwana, including Antarctica and Australia.  The Antarctic research areas are strongly interdisciplinary, focused on interactions between the deep Earth and ice sheets.  Applied research areas are focussed on computational strategies for data-driven knowledge discovery with wide industry and environmental applications.

Teaching expertise

Anya has developed units with student learning objectives to gain knowledge, understanding and practical skills that will serve them as graduate geologists or geophysicists in either industry or research.  She has developed student learning using industry-relevant software, and also strengthened the learning trajectory for those students considering a higher degree by research, with Honours students producing publications in peer reviewed journals. She also played a leading role in creating peer-support and mentoring opportunities for a large cohort of teaching staff through coordinating the Teaching Mentoring Coop for the School of Natural Sciences.

Research Themes

Anya's research group specialises in using, and developing, computational strategies for learning from data from the natural, physical world.  As such, her research aligns naturally with the UTAS research theme Data, Knowledge, Decisions. This includes a range of approaches from the realm of inverse theory and computational data inference and also informatics approaches appropriate to handling 'Big Data' such as machine learning, data mining and advanced data visualisation.  The point of difference of the research that she and her group carry out in the informatics space is the use of the spatial context of input data to improve predictive strength and output confidence.  Other relevant research areas include uncertainty mapping and adaptive decision making.

Anya's research collaborations and group research topics include innovative seismological techniques to investigate environmental phenomena such as ocean storms and the great glaciers of East Antarctica. Her previous and ongoing field projects include multi-year field programs aimed at understanding the tectonic structure and evolution of the southern hemisphere continents focussed on Antarctica, and the interactions between ice sheets and the solid Earth.  She extends her experience in a wide range of physics applications to the development of computational and field techniques in applied and environmental geophysics. Her research therefore also aligns with UTAS research themes Marine, Antarctic and Maritime and Environment, Resources and Sustainability.

Collaboration

Anya's international research collaborations include those with colleagues at the University of Colorado, USA, Swansea University, Wales, and the University of Cambridge, UK.   Ongoing research collaborations in Australia include those with colleagues at the Australian National University, CSIRO, Geoscience Australia and state organisations such as Mineral Resources Tasmania.

Publications

Anya Reading has a track record of pioneering publications, either in field geophysics in remote and challenging regions of our planet, or of innovative applications of computational techniques.  She has contributed numerous book chapters, peer-reviewed journal articles and other published output.  Anya has served as an Associate Editor for the Australian Journal of Earth Sciences, a Guest Editor for Physics Education, and regularly reviews for all the major international geophysics and computational Earth Sciences journals.

Detecting change in the outlet glaciers of East Antarctica using seismology (2021 - 2023)$622,270
Description
This work aims to establish a way of detecting change in the great outlet glaciers of East Antarctica by analysing the small vibrations made by moving water or by cracking and sliding ice. Change in these glaciers is very significant because they hold back over 10 m of potential future sea level rise, but many melt and movement processes are hidden from satellite view. Expected outcomes include a semi-automated approach for remote area glacier monitoring using seismic signals, and recommendations for cost-effective future instrument deployments in key areas of East Antarctica. The new capability will be world-leading and pragmatic, enabling the risks of accelerated future coastal inundation affecting Australia to be better anticipated.

Long-term monitoring of solid Earth deformation and structure in East Antarctica (2020 - 2023)$117,020
Description
The Earth beneath Antarctica is not cold and static but highly dynamic. Its changing shape results from past and present changes in the amount of ice resting on it as well as forces internal to the Earth. These are very poorly understood in Antarctica, and in East Antarctica in particular. Understanding these processes requires a detailed understanding of the interior properties of the Earth and the history of ice loading changes from 20,000 years before present until today. Alternatively, by measuring present-day deformation using GPS, and inferring the properties of the Earth from seismology, we can obtain new information on the past and present ice loading changes.This project will lengthen existing East Antarctic GPS and seismic records to allow detection of new changes in deformation patterns and to estimate Earth's interior properties and long-term deformation rates. These remain necessary for understanding Antarctica's contribution to past and present sea level change.

The Centre will revolutionise predictions of the future of East Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. Changes in the Antarctic will be profoundly costly to Australia, including sea-level and fisheries impacts; but the speed and scale of future change remains poorly understood. A new national-scale and interdisciplinary Centre is required to understand the complex interactions of the ocean, ice sheets, atmosphere and ecosystems that will govern Antarctica's future. The Centre will combine new field data with innovative models to address Australia's Antarctic science priorities, train graduate students, develop leaders, engage the public, and enable major economic benefit as Australia adapts to climate change in the coming years and beyond.

Rapid Deployment Seismic Recorders for Interdisciplinary Antarctic Research (2020)$500,000
Description
We aim to establish an Antarctic-based set of seismic instruments, a mobile facility, to provide data to help predict how ice sheets will evolve and how the continent under the ice sheets will respond to changes in ice load. Our approach to tackling such significant questions is innovative, and makes use of newly available, rapid deployment instruments that may be deployed in ice by a small team with light logistics. Outcomes will include maps of subice sediments and 3D images of the deep Earth. The facility will thus enable new knowledge relating to major ice sheets. Interdisciplinary use of the research will benefit Australia through an improved ability to plan for future sea level rise in areas with large coastal populations.

Towards an early warning of Antarctic ice sheet collapse from seismology (2019 - 2021)$460,000
Description
We will establish a physical basis for the sensitivity of seismic observations to small changes in the great icesheets of East Antarctica. These ice sheets are vulnerable to partial collapse or accelerated retreat. Earlychanges in such ice sheets may take place in the hidden ice-rock interface zone and could be detected by subtlechanges in seismic signals that pass through layers of ice, sediments, water and bedrock in this zone. We willundertake computer simulations, run tests on pre-existing data and examine two case studies: the Aurora andWilkes Basins. The outcomes of this research will provide a basis for an early warning of ice sheet collapse usingseismology, and contribute to future increased resilience to sea level rise.

Sediments and saturation at the ice sheet-bedrock interface from passive seismology (2019 - 2020)$113,424
Description
We aim to infer the structure of the ice sheet-bedrock interface zone, in locations readily accessible from Casey station, in order to determine sediment thickness and characteristics such as saturation and bedrock composition at key locations. These properties form important boundary conditions for ice sheet modelling and are amongst the least-well known features of the hidden basal region of ice sheets. In anticipation of future opportunities relating to underway traverse logistics, an important innovation of this demonstration study is the use of newly available rapid deployment posthole seismometers.

Earth's response to ice unloading: a unique GPS measurement from Antarctica (2015)$252,500
Description
This proposal aims to deploy geophysical equipment within Antarctica to understand how Earth responds to changes in stress (rheology) within the crust and upper mantle (the upper ~660km). It exploits a globally unique natural experiment that commenced in 2002 with the break-up of the Larsen B Ice Shelf and which was followed by large-scale ice-mass unloading and rapid surface deformation. New broadband passive seismic and geodetic deformation measurements offer the promise of resolving a dichotomy between laboratory and millennial-scale determinations of Earth rheology through uniquely studying a time-scale midway between these extremes, whilst further strengthening Australia's emerging expertise in polar geophysics.

Removing bias estimates of East Antarctica's contribution to present and past sea level changes (2015 - 2018)$148,743
Description
The large distances between tide gauges around global coastlines, including Australia's, combined with spatial variability in sea level, means that multidecadal changes in sea-level cannot be well quantified along most coastlines. An alternative data source with greater spatial sampling, satellite altimetry, experiences contamination from land within tens of km from the coast and also suffers from regionally correlated biases. Here we propose to address both problems using re-analysed (re-tracked) radar altimetry waveforms to derive new data in the coastal margin- enabling us to produce new inferences on sea-level change and extremes at dramatically improved spatial resolution around Australia.

Are ocean storms impacting Australia becoming more severe? (2015 - 2017)$368,200
Description
This project will improve our understanding of the severe ocean storms that impact Australia. Our novel approach will make use of multiple decades of the background 'noise' that is recorded continuously by earthquake seismic observatories, to locate and analyse ocean storms through time, and identify changes in storm tracks. An interdisciplinary interpretation will follow which combines the large body of new results from seismology with data from oceanography and meteorology. The significant advancement in our knowledge of severe storms will benefit Australia by finding out whether such storms are becoming more severe or, alternatively, if storm patterns are shifting.

Southern Ocean Storms and Noise Sources from Australian Seismic Array Recordings (2011 - 2012)$140,000
Description
Storm events in ocean areas generate seismic energy. This project uses data from Australian seismic arrays to find the location and severity of Southern Ocean storms through several decades. This adds a vast amount of information for remote regions where there are no direct weather and sea-state observations. The research tests the hypothesis that the Southern Ocean storm patterns in the deep ocean are changing, which has profound implications for the global climate system. The project investigates the variation in wave energy along remote areas of the continent of Australia, over several decades, to inform large scale coastal defence planning and optimise seismic imaging.

Research Supervision

Anya has been an active supervisor of PhD student researchers, since 1998, on topics with a focus on computational geophysics, including machine learning, informatics and seismology.  These projects may include opportunities to undertake fieldwork and/or marine voyages, and may be tailored to career pathways in fundamental science or industry-relevant applied science.  Students in the Compute Earth/Compute Physical Sciences Group are encouraged to be thoughtful and original researchers, and to develop skills in data visualisation, scientific writing and oral presentation at an early stage. All research within this group includes a significant proportion of computing, using programming languages such as Python, and/or GIS environments. A strong mathematics, computing or physics background is appropriate, together with some Earth Sciences knowledge or demonstrated interest.

Enquiries are welcome from prospective Australian and New Zealand students with a BSc Honours Degree (First Class), or International students with a Masters qualification including a substantial thesis or dissertation written in English. The current financial situation for Australian universities means that scholarship places for PhD research are highly competitive.
