Associate Professor Rick Stuart-Smith is a research fellow with the Ecology and Biodiversity group in the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies. His research covers aspects of biogeography, community and macro-ecology, and studies of human impacts, such as pollution, exploitation, invasive species and climate change on marine fauna and flora. A major motivation for his research is to improve the way marine biodiversity is monitored, reported, managed and protected, through contributing to more ecologically-informed policy at larger scales, and guiding local management.

Biography

Rick completed his PhD at the University of Tasmania in 2007, studying the ecology of freshwater fishes. In 2006, he started work on a field-based project at the Tasmanian Aquaculture and Fisheries Institute, leading a small team of divers to survey rocky reef ecological communities at sites around the Tasmanian coastline and Bass Strait Islands. In late 2007, he and Graham Edgar founded the Reef Life Survey program (RLS), starting with a 3-year pilot project to test the effectiveness of training and supporting a national network of recreational divers to undertake detailed reef biodiversity surveys. RLS has since grown significantly, in Australia and internationally. Rick has dived and undertaken biodiversity surveys of rocky and coral reefs all around Australia, across the Pacific Ocean, in the Mediterranean, Atlantic, Caribbean, Red Sea, and Indian Ocean. He has trained ~250 divers to undertake RLS surveys, and undertaken collaborative field research with the Smithsonian Institution and international NGOs such as the Wildlife Conservation Society and Fauna and Flora International. His research primarily revolves around field-collected marine biodiversity data, and incorporates first-hand experience with a diversity of marine environments and faunas.

Ecosystem functions and phase-shifts: herbivory as a predictor of health for Australias warming reef ecosystems (2023)$7,500
Description
In temperate regions, the collapse of reef ecosystems involves loss of habitat-forming kelps. Trajectories of reef ecosystem recovery are therefore largely determined by the re-establishment of primary habitat-formers which support associated reef species. My project will quantify the role of herbivores as a determinant of kelp at multiple sites and depth across southeast temperate Australia by measuring rates of herbivory on the reef. This research will identify which species of herbivores will be vital to manage for safeguarding collapse and promoting recovery of reef ecosystems.

Safeguarding natural values of the Great Southern Reef (2022 - 2025)$2,000,000
Description
Through pathways leading from science onto public, management and political sectors, this project aims for a step-change in the sustainable maintenance of critical functions, fisheries, and biodiversity of the Great Southern Reef (GSR)the ecologically connected reef network spanning Australias southern coasts. A new The Great Southern Reef Partnership will be established to(1) integrate scientific and management efforts to safeguard the GSR, (2) advance public and political perceptions of its value, and (3) generate positive change in upper management and political domains.1.Integration of GSR science.Building on 30 years of foundational research by UTAS Coastal Ecosystem Team, scientific activities will be coordinated and extended across the GSR. Efforts of university researchers, state management authorities, and NGOs will be leveraged to better understand management options for ecosystem protection and restoration. Annual workshops will identify priority knowledge gaps, monitoring needs, and coordinated experiments extending from WA to NSW and Tasmania. Example subprojects include: (1) eDNA studies to increase ecosystem monitoring efficiency; (2) assessment of effectiveness of marine park networks; (3) tracking threatened species; and (4) continent-scale experiments to understand ecosystem function. Funds will fill research gaps that link partner projects, and salaries for personnel key to maximising project outputs and their dissemination: a project officer, data manager, behaviour change scientist, and technician.2.Communication of knowledge.A communications officer will broadcast engaging scientific findings through both traditional and social media to increase awareness of the importance of the GSR, to highlight needs for increased, more efficient efforts to reduce threats to its health, and to increase public engagement in conservation.3.Impact and alignment.Behaviour change studies will identify the social networks, preferences and relative influence of managers, Traditional Owners and key stakeholders. Diverse leaders will be engaged, and behaviour change findings applied in strategies to improve conservation outcomes across the GSR.

Understanding the role of temperature on reef biodiversity change (2022 - 2023)$11,020
Description
Gradual ocean warming and extreme thermal fluctuations have exacerbated the need to understand how temperatureimpacts marine biodiversity. However, long-term ecological data that is systematic and comparable through space and timeis only recently available. Australia's reef communities have been well documented for years, and the country's continuouscoastline that spans temperate to tropical latitudes provides a unique opportunity to study how they react to various levelsof warming and cooling. This PhD will assess how species distributions and abundances change with temperature, where theHollsworth Wildlife Research Endowment grant will allow this project to explore the seasonal fluctuations and localconditions that impact their responses at the cooler ends of their range. By using underwater visual censuses, temperate reefcommunities will be monitored continuously at eight different locations in Tasmania. Mixed-effects modelling and linearregression will be conducted to determine the relationship between temperature and biodiversity. This information will beuseful to identify any patterns that can improve our predictions and reduce biases when assessing species responses totemperature throughout the rest of their range. With this, the project can help address the urgent demand for adequatemarine resource management under the face of a changing climate.

: Reef community responses to protection & a decade of warming in Port Phillip Bay & Port Phillip Heads (2021)$5,000
Description
The project will identify changes in reef biodiversity in the Port Phillip Heads Marine Park and smaller sheltered Port PhillipBay marine reserves using 10 years of Reef Life Survey (RLS) data and Parks Victoria's contracted 27 years of ecological monitoring data. It will considerall of these protected areas in an investigation of the combined responses of reef communities to MPA protection and warming over a decadal scale, thus assisting management evaluation of MPA efficacy by better partitioning and understanding the relative roles of protection from fishing andwarming-driven community change.

Safeguarding Threatened Reef Species (2021 - 2023)$15,815
Description
Marine biodiversity loss may be rapidly increasing as a result of climate change, pollution, fishing, and habitat degradation, but quantifying population trends can be extremely difficult for marine species, which live out-of-sight, are often rare and highly cryptic by nature. My PhD will involve the analysis of existing data on reef species collected through the Reef Life Survey program (www.reeflifesurvey), to evaluate population trends and range sizes. This data has been collected by skilled SCUBA divers using globally standardised methods and provide a unique opportunity to assess threat status for >1,000 reef species. This project will allow me to target additional field surveys in the Albany (Western Australia) region, which is a particularly important area for evaluating the threat status of temperate Australian marine species but remains a key gap in the currently available time-series data for my PhD analyses. Large impacts were observed on endemic WA temperate marine species following the 2011 marine heatwave at Rottnest Island and Jurien Bay, but no post heatwave surveys have been undertaken using the standard methods on the south coast of WA. This region may have provided a critical stronghold for species extirpated from the west coast during the warm years (and possibly now threatened) but follow up surveys are needed to determine this.My project aims to determine which fish, invertebrate and algal species classify as threatened using international, national, and local criteria, provide formal documentation for listing these, and inform managers and the broader community of the species and locations under the greatest threat and requiring the most urgent management attention. This project addresses numerous Holsworth interest areas, including fieldwork on Australian native marine species to identify which are rare and/or threatened and investigate their population dynamics and distributions for best practice conservation and management to maintain biodiversity.

Direct & Indirect Effects of MPA protection and habitat condition on Australian reef recovery (2021 - 2023)$10,185
Description
This project aims to identify the extent that habitat condition contributes to the ecological recovery potential for reefs inside Marine Protected Areas (MPA), relative to other potentially important factors such as management inputs, social and environmental contexts, and pollution. Project support will allow field surveys of reef biodiversity to be conducted across Australia, with initial focus on Lizard Island reefs (northern Great Barrier Reef), a decade after the original baseline surveys were completed through the Reef Life Survey program. Ecological change in fish, mobile invertebrate, and coral populations (at the same sites using the same methods) will be quantified in the different MPA zones, and include sites ranging from severely impacted by recent coral bleaching events and cyclones to unimpacted (habitat change will be quantified as part of the surveys). Data collected will contribute to a continental analysis into the effects of MPA protection, habitat condition and environmental pressures on Australian reef communities.

Assessing multidecadal climate-driven shifts for Tasmanian marine species (2020 - 2021)$48,314
Description
Assessing multidecadal climate-driven shifts for Tasmanian marine speciesThis project aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of multidecadal changes in Tasmanian marine biodiversity in response to climate change. Over the past 28-years, species-level monitoring of marine floral and faunal communities has been consistently carried out by scientific divers at more than 100 rocky reef sites around Tasmania, during three distinct periods: (1) 1992-1995, (2) 2006-2007, and (3) 2016-2020. Analysis of this data set will provide a critical assessment of climate change impacts, as well as projections of further changes in the different marine bioregions of Tasmania. This project is highly cost-effective as it leverages upon existing reef fieldwork costing ~$750,000 across three decades. The project therefore represents a critical opportunity to increase fundamental scientific understanding of key climate-driven changes for Tasmanian marine ecosystems. The project also aims to contribute to website tools enabling long-term changes in Tasmanian rocky reef communities to be readily explored by members of the public and tailored to provide key ecosystem indicators to inform management decisions.

Ecology and Conservation Biology of Red Handfish (2020 - 2022)$39,593
Description
Through GPS-tracked SCUBA censuses, we aim to search the two known populations for red handfish in the hope to complete a capture-mark-recapture study via photo-identification. This will allow us to estimate population size for the species - something that is currently not done. Additionally, we will describe growth, movement and habitat preference in the species, as well as trial genetic techniques for genetic population studies.

Tackling marine conservation issues at national and global scales (2019 - 2023)$886,576
Description
This project aims to collect and apply standardised underwater data on fishes, invertebrates and plants in an unprecedented global analysis of decadal change in rocky and coral reef ecosystems. Outcomes will include validation of global models of ocean warming and understanding of poorly known ecological impacts of recreational fisheries. A suite of data-informed recommendations developed through engagement across management, science and public sectors will benefit Australians by enabling improved sustainability of resource use. International benefits will propagate through increased data access, improvements in predictive models and the evidence base required for large-scale biodiversity-related policy reform.

Rewiring marine food webs: predicting consequences of species range shifts (2017 - 2019)$537,000
Description
Accelerating environmental change is radically affecting the structure, resilience and productivity of coastal marineecosystems at both regional and global scales. We will combine global species distribution and trait databases, existing experimental data and new targeted field sampling to develop, test and apply an integrated modellingplatform to predict how global warming driven changes in species distributions and their interactions affect thestructure and dynamics of shallow marine communities. We will address a key knowledge gap on how speciesredistributions and trophic dynamics interact to simultaneously produce novel communities. We aim to forecastfuture species abundances for sustainable marine ecosystem management.

Rocky Reef Health (2016)$100,000
Description
The project examine the health of rocky reef ecosystems in the Cradle Coast NRM region of Tasmania by contrasting current condition with identical surveys undertaken in that region (and on a state-wide basis) in 1993/4 and 2005/6. I will provide information of significant value to management, including the influence of climate change of reef flora and fauna, the direct and indirect (bycatch to ecosystem) effects of fishing activities (including lobster, abalone, scalefish), influence of introduced species and marine pests, extent of recovery from cessation of major industrial pollution sources and improve understanding of natural variability across decadal scales. It is complimentary to current projects (ARC-Linkage building ecosystem understanding on reef systems) and an FRDC study establishing baselines for marine farm expansion, and will build the framework for a full state-wide assessment of reef health in 2017/18.

Biotic connectivity within the temperate Australian marine protected area network at three levels of biodiversity - communities, populations and genes (2010 - 2015)$1,635,800
Description
This project will integrate broad spatial-, temporal- and taxonomic-scale datasets with phylogenetic hierarchies and taxonomic expertise to address key ecological and biogeographical questions related to: (i) historical and contemporary factors that have shaped the distribution of marine fauna around the southeastern Australian coast; (ii) factors affecting connectivity of gene flow between reefs; (iii) relationships between genetic richness and population stability; and (iv) optimal design of Australia's marine protected area network. The project builds on existing ecological datasets that are unique global in spatial and temporal scale, adding a phylogenatic dimension through rapid recent advances in population genetics and taxonomy.
