Research Themes
Małgorzata's research aligns to the University's research theme of Data, Knowledge and Decisions. Her research interests lie in applied probability and operations research, which are the areas that form the foundation of theoretical and applied framework of methodologies with applications in a wide range of real-life systems of considerable engineering and environmental systems of significance.
Collaboration
Early in her career, during her postdoc, Małgorzata has established collaborations in matrix-analytic methods with Nigel Bean (Adelaide University) and Peter Taylor (Melbourne University). Later, through her multiple research initiatives, invited visits and grants, she has formed collaborative links in applied probability with Barbara Margolius (Cleveland University), Werner Scheinhardt (University of Twente), and Zbigniew Palmowski (Wroclaw University of Technology); in remote sensing with JC Olivier (Engineering, UTAS); and in modelling mobile networks with James Montogomery (School of Information & Communication Technology, UTAS). In 2015, Małgorzata has organised Stochastic Modelling meets Phylogenetics collaborative workshop (http://www.maths.utas.edu.au/People/oreilly/SMMP/smmp2015.html) with the aim to establish a cross-disciplinary collaboration in stochastic modelling and phylogenetics, and to facilitate training and innovation, with the focus on the development of collaborative projects encompassing the two research areas. Since then, she has formed a successful collaboration with Barbara Holland (Discipline of Mathematics, UTAS) and David Liberles (Temple University), developing novel advanced models and computational techniques for the analysis of evolution of species and gene families, building on her expertise in matrix-analytic methods. In recent years, Małgorzata has established a multi-disciplinary collaborative research group in modelling healthcare systems at the University of Tasmania. She is leading work on novel models for the optimisaiton of patient flow, in collaboration with Richard Turner (School of Medicine, UTAS), Pieter Van Dam (School of Medicine, UTAS), Peter Maree (Tasmanian Department of Health), and James Montgomery (School of Information & Communication Technology, UTAS).
Current projects
Małgorzata is continuing her work on several projects in applied probability and applications to evolution and the analysis of complex, unpredictable systems. In particular, she is currently leading research projects in modelling healthcare systems, in collaboration with School of Medicine, Royal Hobart Hospital and Tasmanian Department of Health.

Publications
During her Masters and PhD research, Małgorzata made contributions to the theory of optimal design and reliability of linear consecutive systems, a class of systems applicable throughout industry, including, for example, telecommunications, mining, space exploration and medicine. She has developed various necessary conditions for the optimal design of linear consecutive-k-out-of-n systems and novel results for variant optimal designs. Both her Masters and PhD theses were in the area of linear consecutive systems.
In more recent years, Małgorzata has been involved in research in matrix-analytic models, and made contributions to the development of the theory of stochastic fluid flow models, a class of Markov-driven stochastic models with applications in a wide range of real-life systems of engineering and/or environmental significance. Her contributions include:
- Development of theoretical expressions for various performance measures and their physical interpretations
- Construction of efficient algorithms to evaluate these performance measures
- Treatment of bounded and unbounded level-independent models
- Analysis of fluid models with an element of level-dependence
- First analysis of multi-dimensional fluid models
- Time-dependent cyclic fluid models
Her keen area of interest is stochastic modelling, a research area that focuses on developing probabilistic models for real-life systems having an element of uncertainty.

Projects
- Description
- Poor patient flow directly contributes to Emergency Department crowding, bed access-block, and increased length of stay, all of which pose substantial risks to patient safety. The aim of this project is to gain insights about factors that influence patient flow and use them to build predictive mathematical models for optimising patient flow.

- Description
- Funds for the purpose of visiting other Universities to carry out a program of research. Visit to UT will focus on work on a tandem network problem in stochastic fluid networks. During a research visit by Scheinhardt to the University of Tasmania, first steps have been taken to show that the analysis of this problem is indeed possible. Visit to UA will focus on bed allocation problem in health care modelling. This work is in early stages of preparation. The aim of each visit is to prepare a publication in an international journal.

- Description
- An efficient healthcare system is essential for the well-being of any society. The aim of the project is to develop major advances in the mathematical modelling of healthcare systems, in order to improve efficiency, and ultimately, patient health. The first expected outcome is the development of mathematical models that constitute a high-level description of patient flow through hospitals and subacute care, so that demands for emergency and elective capacity are met given limited resources. The second is the development of a bed allocation algorithm that allocates patients to appropriate wards, so as to optimise the set of performance indicators of the system under appropriate constraints, given the current ward occupancy.
