Dr Sarah Prior is the Director of Healthcare Redesign within the Tasmanian School of Medicine where she coordinates the post-graduate, workplace integrated healthcare redesign courses. Sarah’s research interests include health service improvement, with a focus on patient and family involvement and co-design and rural health service delivery.

Biography

Sarah joined the University of Tasmania after completing a PhD with the University of the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. Sarah was previously employed as a Senior Scientist with Queensland Health (2005-2015), working in the Public and Environmental Health Virology and Microbiology laboratories where she had a special interest in Leptospirosis diagnostics and health services quality systems.

Sarah completed her postdoctoral studies at the University of Tasmania’s Rural Clinical School, developing stroke service delivery through co-led redesign. Sarah’s research has contributed to improving outcomes for patients in Tasmania across a variety of disciplines including stroke care, paediatrics, diabetes and maternity services as well as nationally based projects evaluating student and organisational experience in postgraduate healthcare redesign courses.

Sarah’s research aligns to the University’s research theme of Better Health. Her research has a rural focus, supporting local health services and populations through patient and family engagement methods including co-led design and continuous quality improvement. Sarah’s research interests are diverse and include processes for delivering improved access to health services in rural and regional areas, as well as, the diagnosis, management and epidemiological profile of leptospirosis in human and animal populations – particularly Tasmanian devils and other small wild mammals in Tasmania.

Improving outcomes for babies born in North West Tasmania: a quality improvement study (2022)$72,661

Description: The wellbeing of women during pregnancy affects the health of the unborn baby. This can also have lasting effects, for example abnormal lung function tests in early life persist into adulthood and could result in COPD in later life. Pregnant mothers in NW Tasmania are more commonly overweight and obese, and a higher proportion of pregnant women smoke compared to the rest of Tasmania and Australia. Both these problems during pregnancy could result in problems during pregnancy, birth complications, medical problems in early life, and ultimately affect chronic diseases in adulthood. This led to two current research projects to address both excessive weight gain and smoking during pregnancy. The first is - 14 - CCF Application for Research Grant aimed at minimising excessive weight gain during pregnancy and the other is to monitor carbon monoxide during pregnancy, ultimately hoping to reduce smoking during pregnancy. This study proposes to look at how these interventions in pregnancy will impact the health of the babies. If found to be successful, these low-cost interventions could lead to immediate improved health outcomes, affect chronic disease in later life and it could easily be introduced in similar regional and socio-economically disadvantaged areas of the world.

Vertical integration in a community care setting (2020)$5,000

Description: Family Based Care (FBC) is a public benevolent institution based in northern Tasmania. The primary purpose of FBC is to provide family-oriented, community and home-based support to the aged, community members with a disability, and their carers. The goal of FBC is to provide comprehensive support to these community members, allowing them to remain in their own homes for as long as possible.Problem:In order to provide the best support to clients, FBC requires access to a number of services. Currently, some services are difficult for FBC to access in the community. These services are typically allied health care professionals, including physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech pathologists, and psychologists.Questions:1.Would a vertical integration model (building or buying businesses that provide these allied health services) be an efficient and/or effective means to ensure FBC's ready access to these services?2.Are there examples in other parts of Australia or the world of community-based care organisations who have successfully implemented a vertical integration model in a community care setting? *If so, does a vertical integration model make sense (practically, financially) in this context? *If so, what specific models are being used, and are they functioning effectively?3.There is a general shortage of allied health professionals in regional and remote areas. Could vertical integration be a useful tool for building capacity in allied health in these communities? Is this an efficient way to achieve this goal?

Evaluation of the Regional Integrated Diabetes Education (RIDE) Pilot Program (2020 - 2021)$5,294

Description: Providing comprehensive high-quality care for people with diabetes is complex and relatively resource intensive. Best practice care is constantly changing and keeping abreast of latest research is an expectation of health care practitioners and is time consuming to maintain. The Regional Integrated Diabetes Education (RIDE) program delivers diabetes education for health care practitioners through the John Morris Diabetes Centre (JMDC). Although the JMDC plays a key role in managing complex diabetes patients across the north of the state and delivers education to health care practitioners who deliver primary care, service gaps remain, and as such this project aims to build stronger links with primary care providers by evaluating the education program RIDE. The University of Tasmania have been engaged to undertake an evaluation of the RIDE program through telephone interviews with those who participate in the program. A model such as Kirkpatrick's model will be utilised to theme the data with the aim to determine the overall applicability, feasibility and educational value for clients.

Assessment and Management of Obesity and Self-Management Qualitive Study (2019)$13,000

Description: : The aim of this project is to better understand the barriers and facilitators to self-care in obesity management. The AMOS clinic was established as both a clinic and a research project in parallel. The clinic's focus was to provide the person with the support to enable informed appropriate individualised choices to support weight loss. Strategies included advice, psychological and dietary support, medicines and surgery; with a focus on skills development for self-maintenance to support success. Further, the research component plans to assess the ability to translate the Australian NHMRC Obesity Guidelines into practice in a rural setting.
