Adele Vincent
NHMRC Research Fellow
Menzies Institute for Medical Research
Room 439-09 , Medical Science 2
Dr Adele Vincent is an NHMRC Research Fellow at the Menzies Institute for Medical Research. She is interested in the role of immune cells in the cause of Alzheimer's disease.
Biography
Dr Vincent has been a neuroscience researcher with a long-standing interest in the involvement of glial cells and immune cells in neurological diseases.
Adele is currently working in the field of Alzheimer's disease, investigating how the brain's immune cells, microglia, could be causative in Alzheimer's disease. This work is being performed on a part-time basis in the Laboratory of Molecular Neurobiology, Menzies Institute of Medical Research, while raising a family.
Previously, Dr Vincent worked for two years as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. There she investigated the role of a plasticity-related gene, SPARC/osteonectin in neural development and regeneration following stroke. She discovered that SPARC was expressed exclusively in glial cells and microglia, not in neurons.
Adele's PhD was obtained at the University of Tasmania in 2005, studying the molecular and cellular biology of olfactory glial cells. A major finding that stemmed from her PhD work involved a new understanding of olfactory glial cells as potential immune protectors of the brain.
Prior to PhD studies, Adele travelled extensively, worked for a year as a research assistant at Griffith University, Queensland, and did a BSc(Hons) at the University of Tasmania.

Research Themes
Adele's research aligns to the University's research theme of Better Health. Her interest lies in understanding how neurological diseases could be caused by the non-neuronal cells of the nervous system - the glial cells (mainly astrocytes) and the immune cells (microglia). Her fascination in glial cell biology stems from over a decade of working with various populations of these highly adaptable cells, long before they were generally considered to be important to neurological function. However, in the past few years, an explosion of new research has begun to reveal the vital importance of glial cells and microglia to every aspect of brain function, from development through to healthy aging.
Adele is currently investigating how microglia could cause Alzheimer's disease. She is studying the interactions between microglia, neurons, and the peptide, Abeta, which is a pathological marker of Alzheimer's disease.
Collaboration
Adele established a collaboration during her PhD to perform microarrays at the Queensland Institute of Medical Research in Brisbane.

Research Supervision
Dr Vincent co-supervised one PhD candidate to completion in 2013. She has mentored many PhD, Honours and undergraduate students in the lab, beginning as a junior PhD student herself, and provided important unofficial supervision and mentoring for all the students (7) in her Canadian lab while the Principal Investigator was on study leave for 3 months.
