Prof Small is an NHMRC Senior Research Fellow at the Menzies Institute for Medical Research, University of Tasmania. David's research interests include neurodegenerative diseases (development of diagnostic tests for Alzheimer's disease, mechanisms of amyloid folding and aggregation, amyloid toxicity, therapeutics), cholinergic neurobiology (acetylcholinesterase), protein glycosylation, extracellular matrix and heparan sulfate proteoglycans, protease and neuronal cell biology. His work encompasses papers in the fields of nanotechnology (scanning tunnelling microscopy), biochemistry, molecular and cell biology, neuropharmacology, clinical diagnostics, computational neuroscience and behavioural testing.  He is well known internationally in the field of Alzheimer' disease, especially for his work on the molecular mechanisms that underlie changes in acetylcholinesterase expression in Alzheimer's disease brain and on the structure and metabolism of the b-amyloid precursor protein.

Biography

Professor Small was born in 1956 in Hobart, Tasmania, but he grew up and received most of his early education in Canada.  He returned to Australia in late 1977 and completed his PhD in the biochemistry department of The University of Melbourne in 1981. After postdoctoral research at MIT (Boston), he returned to Australia (Flinders Uni, Adelaide) in 1985. He moved back to the University of Melbourne in 1986 as an NHMRC Australian Postdoctoral Fellow. In 1991, he was awarded an NHMRC RD Wright Fellowship and in 1993 he was awarded an NHMRC Research Fellowship.  He became an NHMRC Senior Research Fellow in 1996 and has been continuously within the NHMRC fellowships scheme ever since.  He moved to Monash University in March 2003, and in 2008, he took up his present position at the Menzies Institute for Medical Research at the University of Tasmania. He has received continuous NHMRC project/program grant funding since 1990.

Establishment of a digital transmission electron microscopy facility (2014)$380,000
Description
Transmission electron microscopy is a fundamental tool for the study of biological systems at the ultrastructural level. Tasmania has only one, aged and barely functioning electron microscopy facility. This proposal is to establish a State-wide facility that will be accessible to a range of biological researchers across Tasmania, as well as the CSIRO and Antarctic Division. The proposed instrument will be established in new purpose-built laboratory space in the UTAS Medical Sciences Precinct, and will be supported by the Central Science Laboratory. The instrument will revitalise cellular research in Tasmania, and provide additional insights and outcomes related to the study of intracellular features in a diverse range of systems and models.
