Dr Russell Thomson is a biostatistician with many years of experience in applying statistics to problems in genetics, health, ecology and many other fields.

Biography

During Russell's Honours and PhD projects, he learnt about the theory of stochastic processes and their applications to biological problems. He developed theory for estimating the ages of genetic mutations for population genetics. During postdoctoral positions at the Stanford University and University of California, Berkeley, he applied this theory to a worldwide sample of humans.

On returning to Australia in 2001, he was approached to begin a position in Bioinformatics, at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute. When he moved to Tasmania in 2004, he was again approached and offered a position at the Menzies Institute for Medical Research (MIMR). It was there that he developed interests in longitudinal analysis, genetic epidemiology and analysis of correlated data (via pedigrees). He was interested in working in statistical ecology, and so tutored in the school of Zoology and collaborated on projects in forest ecology and botany in his spare time.

In 2009, he was once again approached to begin a new position, this time at the Institute of Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS). He continues to divide my time between MIMR and IMAS. At IMAS, he has continued to develop an interest in longitudinal analysis, and to also develop an interest in marine ecology, machine learning techniques and prediction of biodiversity.

Research Themes

Russell's research at the Menzies Institute of Medical Research aligns to the University's research theme of Better Health. His research interests include the search for genetic determinants of disease.

Russell's research at the Institute of Marine and Antarctic Research aligns to the University's themes of Marine, Antarctic and Maritime; and Environment, Resources and Sustainability. He is currently working with the Reef Life Survey to develop indicators of fishing pressure. Russell's research team conduct the statistical analysis of large biological data sets to make decisions relevant to the community, whether they are of medical or ecological origin, and as such they align with the Data, Knowledge and Decisions theme.

Collaboration

Russell is the primary investigator on a project that is examining the genetic susceptibility for kidney disease in an Australian Indigenous population. This project is a collaboration between Prof. Matthew Jose from the Royal Hobart Hospital, Prof. Emily Hilder from the Department of Chemistry at UTAS, Prof. Simon Foote and others from the John Curtin School of Medical Research and Prof. Wendy Hoy from the University of Queensland. He has strong associations with researchers; Prof. Alison Venn and Dr. Costan Magnussen. In conjunction with these researchers, he collaborates with Prof. Terry Dwyer at the Murdoch Children's Institute in Melbourne and Profs Olli Raitakari and Markus Juonala at the University of Turku, Finland. This project involves the longitudinal analyses of large cohort data sets, to obtain the childhood determinants of adult cardiovascular risk.

Awards

  • 2013 Award for the best and second best paper at the Marine Hub
  • 1994-1997 PhD scholarship, from Australian Postgraduate Awards
  • 1993 Honours Scholarship, from the Australian Society of Statistics (Victorian Branch)

Current projects

At the Institute of Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS), Russell collaborates directly with Prof. Graham Edgar, Dr. Rick Stuart-Smith and Dr. Neville Barrett and the nationwide Marine Biodiversity Hub. As a part of the Reef Life Survey program, they have compiled a large data set of fish, invertebrate, algae and coral abundances from around the globe (with more than 2000 sites). Using this dataset he has applied state-of-the-art machine learning models (such as Random Forests and Gradient Forests) to predict fish biomass and biodiversity in unsurveyed sites both in Australia and globally. They have published the results of these analyses in two Nature papers.

At the Menzies Institute of Medical Research (MIMR), Russell leads a project that is examining the genetic susceptibility for kidney disease in an Australian Indigenous population. Along with his own research project, he is an integral part of the Cancer, Immunology and Genetics theme within the MIMR. He works directly with the theme head, A/Prof. Joanne Dickinson on various complex diseases and their genetic susceptibilities and he works closely with Dr. Rebekah McWhirter on another project on genetics and Indigenous health. The advent of genome wide SNP array and next generation sequencing data sets has produced many very large data sets that require high-end statistical tools. For these projects, he has developed methodology for analysing very large data sets that reduce the computational time (published in Human Genetics and the American Journal of Human Genetics). He has many other publications in high impact journals on the analysis of genetic data (such as Nature Genetics and Blood).

A vulvar cancer cluster caused by genetic susceptibility: investigating the genetic mechanism (2014 - 2016)$1,116,905
Description
Cancer of the vulva is 70 times more common in young Aboriginal women in Arnhem Land than in other women. Human Papillomavirus (HPV), which also causes cervical cancer, is the usual cause of this cancer; initial investigations have found that HPV is present in these cancers but is not the reason for the excessive incidence. This study will investigate inherited risk factors contributing to the development of this diseasein this population.

Familial Haematological Malignancies: understanding the role of inherited causative factors (2014)$20,000
Description
Genetic factors are known to contribute to the risk of developing haematological malignancies, however to date the underlying genetic drivers of disease development remain largely unknown. Knowing the causative genes is not only important in understanding the disease process but also provides a range of benefits in the diagnosis, development of tailored treatments, and identification of new targets for therapy. Studying families with multiple cases of these diseases is a powerful approach used to identify the causative genes.

Genetic aetiology of familial haematological malignancies (2013 - 2014)$35,000
Description
The project outlines the genetic analysis of a rare resource, utilising high density SNP genotyping to perform familial linkage analysis of twelve large families. It will identify genes predisposing to haematological malignancies in a novel dataset.

Integrative genomic approaches to understanding the genetics of prostate cancer (2009 - 2011)$515,699
Description
The aims of this project are to: 1) examine the contribution of 14 recently identified prostate cancer susceptibility loci to risk of disease in the Tasmanian Familial and Sporadic Prostate Cancer datasets; 2) perform genome-wide linkage analysis of selected large families with an increased incidence of prostate cancer to identify new cancer susceptibility loci; 3) examine these loci in the context of the results obtained from Aims 1-3; 4) prioritise genes lying within candidate intervals using a variety of expression and genomic techniques alongside bioinformatic approaches; and 5) continue to expand the Tasmanian Prostate Cancer Dataset using Tasmanian Cancer Registry records and the Menzies Genealogical Database.
