Bob Pease is an Adjunct Professor in the School of Social Sciences. Bob was Chair of Social Work at UTAS until July 2017. His research interests include men’s violence against women, critical approaches to social work, profeminist work with men, undoing privilege, patriarchy, as well as posthumanism and the man question.

Biography

Bob Pease has worked in Social Work Education for over 35 years. His first academic appointment was in 1980 at the Tasmanian College of Advanced Education prior to its amalgamation with the University of Tasmania. He was later appointed in 1983 to an academic position at the then Phillip Institute of Technology before its amalgamation with RMIT University. After six years as Lecturer, he was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 1989 and later promoted to Associate Professor in 2002. He then took up the position of Chair of Social Work at Deakin University in 2005 which he held until 2015 when he was appointed Professor of Social Work in the School of Social Sciences at the University of Tasmania.

Professor Pease has an international reputation in critical social work and critical studies of men and masculinities, having published six single-authored books, 15 co-edited books and over 120 refereed journal articles and book chapters in these fields over the last 30-plus years. Alongside this academic career, he has been actively involved in social activism and community education against men’s violence. He formed Men Against Sexual Assault (MASA) in Melbourne in 1991 to encourage men to take responsibility for addressing men’s sexual violence and he has facilitated numerous workshops on engaging men in violence prevention.

Teaching

Professor Pease has extensive teaching experiences at undergraduate and postgraduate level within social work and gender studies. His main teaching areas have been in critical social work, self and society, sex, gender and society, men and masculinities and gendered violence.

In addition to this classroom teaching experiences, Professor Pease has supervised 19 PhDs and 7 Masters by Research theses to successful completion.

Publications

Bob Pease has edited co-edited seven books in the field of Critical and Radical Social Work, including Doing Critical Social Work: Transformative Practices for Social Justice (2016), Radicals in Australian Social Work: Stories of Lifelong Activism (2017). Critical Ethics of Care in Social Work: Transforming the Politics and Practices of Caring (2018) and Post Anthropocentric Social Work: Critical Posthuman and New Materialist Perspectives (2021). He has also co-edited eight books in the field of Critical Studies of Men and Masculinities, including Migrant Men: Critical Studies of Masculinities and the Migration Experience (2009), Men and Masculinities Around the World: Transforming Men’s Practices (2011), Men, Masculinities and Methodologies (2013) and Men, Masculinities and Disaster (2016). Furthermore, he is single author of six books including Recreating Men: Postmodern Masculinity Politics (2000), Facing Patriarchy: From a Violent Gender Order to a Culture of Peace (2019) and Undoing Privilege: Unearned Advantage and Systemic Injustice in an Unequal World, second edition (2022).

In addition to competitive grants on an evaluation of a program for men with psychiatric disability, community attitudes toward violence, refugee men’s violence, a comparative assessment of good practice in programs for perpetrators of violence, backlash against gender equality and masculinity and deployment trauma,  Professor Pease has also been granted an ARC Discovery Project on Migrant Masculinities: The Impact of Migration onGender Identity Among Immigrant Men From Non-English–Speaking Backgrounds inAustralia and anARC Linkage Project PhD Scholarship on Masculinities and the Health ofYoung Refuge Men from Southern Sudan. Furthermore,  He was part of the lead institutionteams with Heather D’Cruz at Deakin and Steve Myers at Salford University in the UKwhich wrote the grant application with three other Australian University partners and threeEuropean Union partners for the EU-ICI Education Cooperation Program funded projecttitled: The Meanings and Practices of Social Work: Cross-National Comparisons.
