Emily Hansen is a sociologist whose areas of specialisation are the sociology of health and illness and qualitative research methods. Her research investigates health related practices, health care work and how medical and lay people negotiate their understandings about health, illness and parenting. Emily is an emerging research leader in the fields of infant feeding and maternal and child health. She places considerable value on inclusivity, collaboration, research capacity building and mentoring:

  • Emily’s research into breastfeeding conducted with Dr Jennifer Ayton contributes to knowledge about ways in which infant feeding practices are socially embedded and operate within families. Their work has received international recognition and led to greater understanding of the role of fathers/partners and other family members in supporting breastfeeding and the challenges associated with returning to work while breastfeeding.
  • Her scholarship in the field of smoking and smoking cessation explores tobacco use as a social practice and offers an alternative to individualised behavioural approaches. Her research has informed policy and practice in the fields of health promotion, smoking cessation and public health.
  • As a Chief Investigator on the ‘Tassie Kids’ project Emily led the qualitative working group who produced policy relevant knowledge about inter-service collaboration, parents’ understandings of school readiness and their use of early childhood services.
  • She developed a series of successful and popular workshops on qualitative research for health professionals, early career researchers, graduate students and other groups. Emily wrote a textbook based on these workshops, ‘Successful Qualitative Health Research: A Practical Introduction’   published in Australia, the United Kingdom, India and the North America.
  • Emily is an author on the highly regarded Australian introductory sociology text for university undergraduates, Sociology 7th edition.

Projects

559 Lives (2021)$16,300
Description
Quit Tasmania's (a program of Cancer Council Tasmania) '559 Lives' project aims to provide 559 Tasmanians from high smoking prevalence groups with standard Quitline behavioural support plus free nicotine replacement therapy ('the program') to give them the best chance of quitting. Drs Stuart Ferguson and Emily Hansen will conduct an evaluation of the project using both quantitative and qualitative approaches to measure quitting outcomes, use of NRT and better understand smokers' experience of 'the program' and quitting.

Assessing the Australian osteoarthritis landscape - GPs' surgeons' and patients attitudes towards and understandings of osteoarthritis (2018)$24,824
Description
Osteoarthritis is a leading cause of pain and disability among older people and there is currently no cure. In recent years, there has been increasing concern about the discrepancies between care provided by health professionals and recommendations in osteoarthritis clinical practice guideline. For instance, in Australia, referral to a surgeon is five times more common than referral to allied health professionals that could help with conservative management. Furthermore, patients are ambivalent towards conservative management such as exercise, thinking it will be ineffective and may even cause harm to their already worn joints. The disconnect between practice guideline and care for patients with osteoarthritis limits optimal care. Therefore, this study aims to explore the attitudes towards and understanding of osteoarthritis held by Australian GPs, surgeons and patients with knee osteoarthritis. The overarching goal is to gather information needed to develop Australian-specific education and behaviour change programs for GPs, surgeons and osteoarthritis patients

Understanding the perspectives of general practitioners regarding sedentary behaviour management in primary care: a qualitative study (2018 - 2019)$54,977
Description
Despite the growing population-based evidence that demonstrated the strong linear association between sedentary behaviour and increased risk of chronic disease including type 2 diabetes and premature mortality, it is currently unknown how general practitioners (GPs) address this important risk factor in primary care. As GPs have the potential to implement health-related behavioural change as their advice is often respected and they are the 'front line' of the Australian health care system, we aim to understand the perspectives of GPs regarding the importance of sedentary behaviour assessment and management in primary care. To achieve this, we will explore the following research questions using an inductive qualitative research design and open-ended interview questions: (1) How do GPs perceive sedentary behaviour assessment and management in primary care? (2) Are GPs aware of sedentary behaviour management recommendations and/or of any strategies to implement sedentary behaviour management? (3) What are the GPs perceived barriers and facilitators to addressing sedentary behaviour assessment and management in primary care?

Pathways to better health and education outcomes for Tasmanias children (2016 - 2018)$803,171
Description
All Australian states and territories provide universal health and education services for children under the age of five. The need for these servicesis starkly illustrated by the latest national figures that show that one in five children are behind in their development when they start school at the age of five. For far too many of these children, a poor start predicts a poor future. This is especially true for children growing up in Tasmania, which has the highest poverty rate, lowest school completion rate and shortest life expectancy rate, than any other state or territory. The Tasmanian Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Department of Education (DoE) and Department of Premier and Cabinet (DPaC) are working hard to address these problems in innovative ways to improve the lives and prospects of young Tasmanians. This project brings these government departments together with researchers, service providers and consumers to better understand the combined benefit of early childhood services in Tasmania. The power of data linkage, quantitative and qualitative methods will be combined to provide partners with a whole-of-population view of the impact of service use on child outcomes, taking risk and protective factors into account, and including the perspectives of service providers and consumers. The project will track 12,000 children from birth, through all the health and education services available up to the start of formal school at age five. The information will be used to review and reform existing services to increase the reachand benefits of services for all children, especially those with high service needs.

Thriving Communities Healthy Families Evaluation (2015 - 2016)$50,016
Description
TCHF is a place based project which seeks to connect disenfranchised at risk young families with their local neighbourhood house to* Improve their access to services and programs.* Connect them with community supports and promote social inclusion.* Empower families to take greater responsibility for their own health and well-being.* Enhance health and well-being outcomes in the long term. The evaluation seeks to determine what worked in what circumstances for at risk families and to build the evidence base for place based social policy interventions. The project includes an evaluation capacity component in recognition that community service organisations, such as Neighbourhood Houses, often have low skills base in evaluation and limited resources to purchase training and development in this area, despite increasing pressures from funders to demonstrate program outcomes.
