Achievements

Tony Carew develops innovative web applications to support online teaching and learning. He is currently leading the technical development of the Course and Unit Builder, a web application supporting multi-disciplinary design of high-quality Higher Education curriculum. In 2016, with Luke Padgett and Beale van der Veer, Tony designed and implemented the Open Education Licensing (OEL) Toolkit, a database-driven decision tree that guides users to tailored copyright and licensing information. In 2017, the Toolkit was recognised internationally, winning the Open Education Consortium's Awards for Excellence.

In 2015, with the Sharing Learning Resources Project team, Tony developed a Learning Object Repository to allow Open Educational Resources (OER) to become discoverable.

In 2012-14, Tony led the technical development of the University's first Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), Understanding Dementia, from inception to delivery in its first two offerings. The MOOC attracted more than 25 thousand registrants to mid-2014, and achieved significantly high completion rates (between 38%-39%, compared with worldwide averages between 2%-14%).
