The Peter W. Smith CSL Postgraduate Award recognises the most outstanding peer-reviewed publication in the preceding 12 months by a University of Tasmania postgraduate student that made extensive use of Central Science Laboratory (CSL) facilities and expertise.

The prize honours the vision and commitment of the late Dr Peter W. Smith OAM for the formation and continued successful operation of the CSL, and was instigated in 2014 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of establishment of the university facility.

The recipient for 2026 is Mr Sadique Anyame Bawa from Engineering.

Anyame’s paper entitled “From Wastewater Treatment Plants to Farmland: Microplastic Quantification, Transfer, and Risk Assessment from Biosolids Use in Tasmania, Australia” was published in the prestigious journal Science of the Total Environment.  The study addressed a globally important environmental challenge providing valuable new evidence concerning microplastic transfer from wastewater treatment plants to farmland via biosolids. Working closely with A/Prof Thomas Rodemann from the CSL Vibrational Facility, FTIR microscopy was pivotal for microplastics identification and characterisation.

Congratulations Anyame.
