Join us for an artist panel discussion with artists Damien Melchiori and Marquerite Caron facilitated by artist, curator, and Sawtooth ARI Director Zara Sully to hear about artworks commissioned for the University of Tasmania Inveresk Library. This event is part of a curatorial collaboration between the University of Tasmania and Sawtooth Gallery, Inveresk. Over the course of a year, Sawtooth curates two object display vitrines through commissioning new work by artists across the country, responding to the curatorial brief Ways of Knowing.
About the speakers
Damien Melchiori is an artist working in Naarm/Melbourne. He completed the Bachelor of Creative Arts (University of Melbourne, Parkville) in 2009, and the Master of Fine Arts (VCA, Southbank) in 2022. Damien has performed an exhibited nationally and internationally since 2006.
Marguerite Caron (they/them) b. Edinburgh 1998 is an artist and writer based currently in nipaluna/Hobart working between writing, the curatorial, sculpture and film. Often working collaboratively, they are interested in themes of correspondence, navigation, mythmaking and information. They graduated in 2019 from Glasgow School of Art with BA(Hons).
Zara Sully is a multidisciplinary artist, curator and arts worker who engages with intersectional feminist theory and explores the concept of decentralising queerness through a performative practice.
Event series
Ways of Knowing event series is a program of online and on-campus presentations delivered as part of the launch of the new University of Tasmania Library at Inveresk. For this award-winning building designed by John Wardle Architects, a series of new works were commissioned and installed alongside works from the University of Tasmania’s cultural collections, as well as temporary exhibitions. As a site of learning, the artworks works introduce different epistemologies and nudge us to ask: what are all the different ways of knowing around us? What can nature, our surrounding lands, and waterways teach us? How can we ask better questions, listen deeply, and be open to learning in more ways? Enabled by the Campus Transformation Project, programmed by the Library and Cultural Collections.
