2024 Arthur Cobbold Lecture
In the microscopic world, a silent but significant war is raging against superbugs, or Antimicrobial-Resistant (AMR) bacteria. These tiny troublemakers adapt to resist drugs designed to kill them, making infections harder to treat.
The victories and setbacks in the battle against AMR reveal success stories and concerns. While we've developed life-saving antibiotics, their misuse has led to superbugs gaining strength. The United Nations General Assembly High-Level Meeting on AMR leads the global effort to address this growing threat. Cooperation is crucial because superbugs don't respect borders; they affect people worldwide, and to truly make a difference, we need to rethink our current approach.

About Professor Tim Walsh
Professor Walsh, is a Professor of Medical Microbiology at the University of Oxford and the Co-Director and Biology Lead for the Ineos Institute of Antimicrobial Research, and a University of Tasmania alumnus. He has been studying AMR (Antimicrobial resistance) mechanisms for over 25 years and has published over 330 papers and publishes regularly in Nature and Lancet journals.
He is Director of BARNARDS, an international network examining the clinical burden of AMR in newborns in low-middle income countries and heads up a program in Oxford to remove commonly used human antibiotics from the food industry.
Professor Walsh is an advisor to the Foundation Merieux AMR teaching program and is a member of the World Health Organization's Strategic and Technical Advisory Group for Antimicrobial Resistance.
In 2020, he was awarded an Order of the British Empire for “Microbiology and International Development” and in 2022 was awarded his DSc from the University of Bristol. Professor Walsh’s contribution to his chosen field has been significant and continues to have impacts across the globe.
The Arthur Cobbold Legacy
Arthur Cobbold was a Foundation Professor of Physiology at the University. He played a pivotal role in the School’s development and success, serving as Dean of School for a record 13 years. He is remembered by his students and peers as an outstanding teacher, highly competent researcher, excellent administrator, and a superb raconteur.
In recognition of the legacy of Arthur Cobbold, his wife and the University established an annual public lecture to provide an opportunity for Tasmanians to hear from people of distinction in the field of medicine.
