Summary:Examine how legal mechanisms have been used to silence individuals advocating for Palestine.
In this presentation, Nick Hanna will examine why and how legal mechanisms have been used to restrict or silence individuals advocating in support of Palestine. The discussion will situate these developments within their broader historical and political context, highlighting the factors that have contributed to contemporary forms of repression. He will draw on case studies from a range of jurisdictions to illustrate how Palestine advocates have been subjected to legal proceedings and other regulatory measures. Finally, he will explore practical and legal strategies for responding to and challenging such forms of repression.
Guest speaker
Nick Hanna is the principal of Hanna Legal and a co-founder of the Civil Liberties Defence Centre, a community legal service founded in response to the unprecedented crackdown on political expression during the Gaza genocide. Since October 2023, he has acted in numerous high-profile cases for Palestine defenders. Aside from the law, Nick hosts The What & The Why, an investigative journalism project exposing the role of the Israel lobby in undermining democratic rights in Australia, and he wrote and directed The Last Sky, a bold documentary about Israel's wars in Gaza and Lebanon and the people fighting back.
