Digital Art Wall, Level 1, Inveresk Library

As part of NAIDOC Week 2026, the Inveresk Library Digital Art Wall is presenting Dhukumul WaṈambi's time-based media work, Marrakulu Monuk (2025).

In this animated digital artwork, WaṈambi brings ancestral songlines into motion, translating her clan's sacred saltwater miny'tji (clan designs) into luminous, flowing forms. Interwoven patterns and rhythmic movement evoke connections between Country, culture, and Yolŋu knowledge systems.

The work continues a legacy of cultural innovation inspired by WaṈambi's father, the late artist and cultural leader Mr Waṉambi, who was among the first Yolŋu artists to translate miny'tji from bark paintings and ceremonial objects into moving image. Extending this practice into the digital realm, WaṈambi reimagines a living visual language for contemporary audiences while maintaining its cultural significance.

View Marrakulu Monuk on the Digital Art Wall, Level 1, Inveresk Library, until 31 July 2026

A densely patterned artwork fills the entire frame with flowing, interwoven bands that curve and weave across a black background. The surface is covered in repeated patterns translating the artists clan’s sacred saltwater miny’tji into luminous, swirling forms in white, ochre, brown, and deep reddish tones, outlined with fine white lines and dotted patterns. The overall effect is rhythmic and energetic, like currents of water or winds moving in many directions, creating a sense of continuous movement and connection across the image.
