METHODS - A randomised controlled trial of methotrexate to treat hand osteoarthritis with synovitis.

You are invited to participate in this research project. This is because you have osteoarthritis and joint swelling (synovitis) in your hands. This research is being conducted by Professor Graeme Jones at the Menzies Institute for Medical Research at the University of Tasmania. It is also being conducted by our collaborators at Monash University, University of Adelaide and the University of Western Australia.

What is the purpose of the study?

The METHODS study is a randomised clinical trial with the aim of comparing the effect of methotrexate (the active treatment) with an inactive dummy tablet (placebo) on slowing joint damage as assessed by changes in X-ray along with changes in pain and swelling in participants with symptomatic hand osteoarthritis and synovitis.

Who is invited to participate?

A total of 125 people will participate in the study across all centres. People will be considered for inclusion in the study if you;

• Are 40 – 70 years old
• Have moderate to severe hand joint pain and swelling
• Are willing and able to complete clinical assessments and questionnaires
