Dr Emma Little is a teaching intensive academic who specialises in the Master of Environmental Geospatial Science and the Master of Planning. Her main teaching responsibilities are the two areas of liveable cities that she is most passionate about: land use planning (KGA512 Statutory Land Use Planning) and environmental law and policy (KGA381 Environmental Impact Assessment).
Emma has wide ranging interests in interdisciplinary learning and communication between a range of environmental disciplines. Between 2011 and 2016, she worked as an adviser for a not-for-profit and learned a lot about how government, media, and industry works. She has an ongoing volunteer role in the 'real world', which means Emma is able to give her students authentic learning tasks and conduct research that is strongly linked to need and end users.
Biography
Emma has been at the University of Tasmania since 1999. She moved to Tasmania from a postdoctoral position at the University of Alberta, Canada, where she worked with a team of foresters, economists and social researchers on resilient forest ecosystems. Prior to the position in Canada, she completed a PhD at Macquarie University in Sydney. Her undergraduate science degree was in geography at the University of Melbourne.
Emma has taught at all levels, from first year to postgraduate course work and PhDs. Emma is a Member of the Planning Institute of Australia and focuses on transitioning to liveable, healthy, low carbon cities and environmental impact assessment.

Expertise
Emma began her career as an ecologist and morphed into a planner. She has wide ranging interests in liveable cities and resilient ecosystems. She is currently teaching-intensive and is focused on students and connecting their learning to authentic, place-based Tasmanian experiences and the Tasmania community/industry.
Research Themes
Emma's work has been strongly aligned with the University of Tasmania's research theme of Environment, Resources and Sustainability. Her current work focuses on liveable cities and urban planning. She specialises in planning for improving walking and cycling as a means of moving around our towns and cities and in improving waste management practices.
Emma is a founding member of the multi-award winning Sustainability Integration Program for Students) that aligns student work with the operations side of the University.
Collaboration
Dr Emma Little is a founding member of the multi-award winning Sustainability Integration Program for Students that aligns student work with the operations side of the University. She represented walking and cycling for six years on Tasmania’s Road Safety Advisory Council and has worked closely with local government on various environmental and planning projects since 2012.

Publications
Emma has three main lines of research:
- Most of Emma's publications are in the area of forest management and the maintenance of biodiversity. As an expert biologist, Emma has been invited to international meetings to speak about her work on bryophyte diversity in Australian landscapes. One of her highly cited papers is a review paper in a major conservation journal: Pharo, EJ and Zartman, CE*, 'Bryophytes in a changing landscape: The hierarchical effects of habitat fragmentation on ecological and evolutionary processes', Biological Conservation, 135 (3) pp. 315-325. doi:10.1016/j.biocon.2006.10.016 ISSN 0006-3207 (2007).
- Emma is a 0.8 teaching-intensive academic. She has taken advantage of her focus on teaching to publish in the scholarship of teaching. Using her classrooms for research, she has been awarded Graduate Certificate in University Learning and Teaching and awarded both institutional and national teaching awards. These awards were founded on a strong publication record in high ranking journals.
- In line with her teaching responsibilities and active transport outreach, Emma's research has shifted to planning, particularly on walking and cycling and the wider legal, political and social context needed to make the shift to a more active transport system.
