To connect with Carey:

Biography

During 2010, as part of her role as the Teaching Fellow, Emerging Technologies Carey investigated innovative technologies including eportfolios to facilitate the learning and teaching of undergraduate students. Since then she has explored Echo360 systems and asynchronous online discussions. Her interest in health informatics led to investigating the use of mobile learning in healthcare environments where in 2018, she completed her PhD on this topic.  Carey continues to research student engagement and learning in blended environments and is currently investigating health literacy and ehealth literacy within the health professions. She has also been involved with facilitating high quality work integrated learning experiences for supervisors and students. Past projects include:

  • Mobile learning in Australian healthcare environments
  • Creative media technology use in nursing simulation environments
  • Student engagement and learning within a blended learning environment – eportfolios, Echo360 lecture capture systems, asynchronous discussion forums and social media platforms
  • Rural and remote health promotion - Injury control, immunisation
  • Diabetes type 2
  • Wound healing and pressure injury prevention

Research Themes

Carey's research aligns with the College of Health and Medicine's research theme of healthcare services and support and is complementary to the University's research theme of Better Health. Her research specifically builds on the Discipline of Nursing theme of technology and communication. This research complements technology-enhanced learning and teaching strategies being progressed by the College, aligning with the subthemes of better policy and better systems. Carey is exploring information and communication technologies that will support workforce development in healthcare environments. The findings will inform clinicians and the School about current technology and resources used in practice; enable research outputs that can improve access to evidence-based information in the workplace. The findings will facilitate strengthening communication between UTAS and practice partners; and outcomes will be of direct benefit to clinicians and students based in healthcare settings. This research will specifically benefit clinicians based in primary care settings.

Evaluation of the Regional Integrated Diabetes Education (RIDE) Pilot Program (2020 - 2021)$5,294
Description
Providing comprehensive high-quality care for people with diabetes is complex and relatively resource intensive. Best practice care is constantly changing and keeping abreast of latest research is an expectation of health care practitioners and is time consuming to maintain. The Regional Integrated Diabetes Education (RIDE) program delivers diabetes education for health care practitioners through the John Morris Diabetes Centre (JMDC). Although the JMDC plays a key role in managing complex diabetes patients across the north of the state and delivers education to health care practitioners who deliver primary care, service gaps remain, and as such this project aims to build stronger links with primary care providers by evaluating the education program RIDE. The University of Tasmania have been engaged to undertake an evaluation of the RIDE program through telephone interviews with those who participate in the program. A model such as Kirkpatrick's model will be utilised to theme the data with the aim to determine the overall applicability, feasibility and educational value for clients.

Investigating the transformative role of Echo360 on learning and teaching (2013)$24,790
Description
This project investigates the transformative role of Echo360 on learning and teaching through: a) examining the impacts of the technology on student learning behaviours including learning approaches, class attendance, and the use of Echo360 generated-materials; b) investigating the relationship between class attendance, the use of Echo360-generated materials, and student performance; and c) evaluating the impacts of Echo360 on teaching efficiency and identifying effective practices in using the technology to enhance flexible and online/distance delivery. Participants of the project not only include lecturers of different disciplines, but also an education developer and a learning service coordinator. Given the wide use of Echo360 in Australian universities and limited research on the impacts of the technology on learning and teaching, there is a great opportunity for the project to be extended.
