Andrea Miller is a lecturer within the School of Health Sciences and teaches in both undergraduate and postgraduate nursing programs. She is interested in improving patient outcomes in hospitals and the aged care sector.

Biography

Andrea joined the university from the Launceston General Hospital after working in a variety of positions as a Registered Nurse, including as a Stomal Therapy Nurse.

Research Themes

Andrea's research interests include gender and the LGBTI community and aligns with the University's research theme of Better Health.

Current projects

Andrea is currently exploring the practice of mixed gender wards in an acute care setting from multiple perspectives. The experiences of patients and their families who have been accommodated in mixed gender wards will be explored to develop an understanding of their experiences, expectations, attitudes and preferences in regard to this aspect of care.

Experiences and expectations of LGBTI Tasmanians for care as they grow older (2013)$24,030
Description
This project aims to explore older urban and rural Tasmanian gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex (GLBTI) people's past and present life experiences that may impact upon their future health and health care. Through this, it aims to achieve a deeper understanding of their preferences and expectations for their future aged care and support needs as they grow older. In parallel, it aims to explore Tasmanian Aged Care Service Providers' (ACSPs) capacity and readiness for delivering GLBTI friendly services. Together, these two activities will both identify any gap in GLBTI friendly service provision, and facilitate discussion of how that gap can be closed.
