VTE Prevention

This project investigated the prevention of venous thromboembolism in hospitalised medical patients at the Royal Hobart Hospital. Baseline data were collected, followed by an intervention involving a research clinical pharmacist assessing all new admissions to two target medical wards at the Royal Hobart Hospital over a three-month period.

The pharmacist assessed new patients’ risk of VTE and contraindications to prophylaxis, and made a recommendation to medical staff using evidence-based guidelines. The proportion of patients who were provided with appropriate prophylaxis after the intervention was compared with the baseline data.

This project was funded by the Royal Hobart Hospital Research and Development Fund Starting Grant.
