Introduction

This unit provides learning for you as an HDR candidate to develop your skills and knowledge of academic writing for publication (i.e., journal articles). It provides you, as an aspiring researcher, with a framework for writing based on modules such as:

  • planning and structuring writing;
  • selecting target publications;
  • presenting research findings in writing;
  • editing writing;
  • reviewing the work of others; and
  • addressing reviewers’ comments to maximise chances of publishing in peer-reviewed publications.

This unit is suitable for candidates across all disciplines. General principles of writing for publication will be covered. In addition, opportunity to look at conventions of writing in various disciplines will be available. You will be supported to further develop your critical, analytical, and communication skills, while being provided with an opportunity to participate in and build a community of practice with your peers. The unit will progress from the beginning stages of planning a manuscript right through to the final stages of getting ready to submit a manuscript for review.
Please note that this unit requires that you are sufficiently advanced in your work that you have data that are ready for writing up (i.e., collected, analysed and understood). Typically, this means that students will be in the final half of their candidature. If you are unsure about whether this unit will be appropriate for you please discuss with your supervisory team and the unit coordinator.
