Introduction
The unit will continue developing students understanding of the significance of historical knowledge in developing new creative work.
A variety of modules will explore the history of Jazz and Popular music, and students will put this historical knowledge into context through transcription, analysis and performance of key recordings. This will be undertaken in a 'Historical Context' specific ensemble. There is an expectation that the complexity of the work of the Historical Context Ensemble at level 200 will be more sophisticated than that done in level 100 units. Students will additionally be assigned a small ensemble in which they will investigate ensemble performance through regular rehearsals and lessons that are designed to develop idiomatic specific ensemble skills.
Students will perform pieces developed in their ensemble in both workshop and concert settings. They will also perform and undertake seminar presentations with their Historical Context ensemble.
