Introduction
This unit examines the role that music has played in the Western Church from the pre-Reformation period to the present day. Focusing on specific topics, it considers a range of musical styles and usages that have been developed in response to socio-cultural and religious debates from Gregorian chant and Anglican anthems to Gospel music and contemporary Christian music. Historical and modern debates concerning the function of music in liturgy and the role of the church musician in worship will also be explored.

Learning Outcomes
- Be able to demonstrate an understanding of the changing role of music in the Western church from the pre-Reformation period to the present day and the development of distinctive musical styles in the context of religious debates and socio-cultural changes.
- Have developed research skills and demonstrate familiarity with resources for church music practice and research and be able to demonstrate critical evaluation of textual and musical sources.
- Recognise the hallmarks of various styles of church music through critical listening.
- Demonstrate scholarly communication skills and appropriate use of discipline-specific terminology.
