Introduction

Post-Tonal Techniques introduces the music from approximately 1900 through study of the various 'schools' of musical composition during the twentieth century and beyond. Students will examine elements of pitch, rhythm, form, harmony and texture from twentieth-century repertoire and develop written skills with specific stylistic features such as atonality, serialism, post-serialism, minimialism, new Romanticism and others through a series of analytical and writing projects. Alongside the theoretical content, aural skills will reinforce reading and dictation skills related to post-tonal music and contemporary rhythmic organisation.
