Introduction

This unit is fundamentally driven by the recognition of the ways in which the past continues to shape the present: that creative practice today not only builds on, but also continues to engage with and contest, histories of visual and performing arts. The unit is centred on Renaissance humanism and Enlightenment ideals, philosophies that radically changed conceptions of the artist from an anonymous artisan to an inspired individual.

The unit also places the art practice of the time as part of a larger narrative of the retrieval and reinterpretation of the classical world. By placing developments in performing and visual arts within cultural, technological and political contexts, this unit will explore how the arts were deeply implicated in the radical changes of these periods and invite students to make connection with the present.
