Introduction

This unit provides practice-led Honours students with ideas,
knowledge, and skills for doing research and professional
practice across a broad range of disciplines. It supports
individual studio-based enquiries and interdisciplinary
practices in visual arts, design and theatre and
performance.
The research conducted for this unit will lay the
groundwork for your thesis submission in second semester.
In this unit you will develop a research plan and time line
for the pursuit of a line of speculative, self-directed creative
work.
Through contextual research you will be able situate the
concerns informing your practice in the context of current
theoretical ideas and critical debate in the creative arts as
well as identifying the key examples of arts practice that are
relevant to your project.
From individual studio-based projects in specific media,
through to collaborative and interdisciplinary projects, this
unit introduces a range of methodologies that explore the
relationship between making and research that enhances
their practices and prepares the candidate for a range of
professional and academic outcomes.
The unit equips the candidate with a range of skills in better
understanding their project within a broad field of practice.
It introduces a range of specific skills in identifying and
locating a language through which to further and
communicate your project. Successful completion of the
unit will prepare the candidate to further their practice in
professional and academic research settings.

  • Apply research skills to identify and demonstrate knowledge of writers, arts practitioners and arts professionals, relevant to your field of investigation.

  • Demonstrate an informed and critical familiarity with methodological and theoretical approaches to the creation of practice-led research in your discipline or disciplines, including reference to the planning of a project.
  • Identify, consider and comply with the relevant ethical and safe work practices associated with your project.
