Introduction
This practical unit introduces and builds on concepts of image making through drawing. Within a framework of projects and studio-based exercises you will explore and experiment with ideas and materials that challenge the latent opportunities within contemporary and conventional drawing practice.
The purpose of this unit is to build your drawing and making skills in ways that develop your creative ability and personal expression. It will also develop your awareness of the visual world, an awareness that is both subjective (knowing how you feel about things) and objective (understanding how things actually operate). The emphasis is on exploratory art making and the production of ideas and forms.
Artist talks, lectures, class presentations, group discussion and critique will support practical work. These and other class activities encourage positive and productive dialogue within a supportive class culture. They will also build ability in identifying, describing and communicating (written and oral) the principles and forms of drawing and your knowledge of contemporary drawing practice.
The unit is designed to prepare students for advanced level subjects in visual art.
