Introduction

This unit will broaden your capacity to understand and engage with diverse materials, methodologies and processes associated with contemporary art practice, especially within printmaking and drawing. Through group and individual tasks, you will develop your ability to experiment with materials, iterative process and idea development.

This unit will focus on the development of skills in observation and translation to produce a sequence of works. Through the guidance of staff, students are encouraged to develop independent learning strategies towards the development of individual expression and self- directed outcomes. Artist talks, lectures, class presentations, group discussion and critique will support practical work. These and other class activities encourage positive and productive dialogue within a supportive class culture. Students will be guided through in depth approaches to observation and reflection, connecting their studio-based experiences with contextual knowledge of contemporary art discourse.

Task 1: Folio of works demonstrating iterative approaches to a brief (30%)

Task 2: Journal and folio of process pieces (20%)

Task 3: Presentation, 5 minutes (10%)

Task 4: Artist statement, 300 words (10%)

Task 5: Critique (30%)
